Interesting place to mount the "rear" shock! Also... are the exhausts coming out the back of the engine?

Im not totally up for the rear end, think im going to turn the pipes upside down which will lower the end cans, make them a bit flatter. I also think im going to get rid of all the plastics and put straight bars on the front. Ill have to just go to a local breakers and try new rear plastics etc to see what will fit.

All that isnt so important, whats important is all the great one of stuff thats been made for this bike and how it handles, which is mad. We recon its making about 55-60 bhp as it all polished and ported etc. Not bad when the 400 only had 40 when Yamaha produced it.

Regards

Gary

I agree about the rear end, a set of USD forks would look the tits.

What sort of power is it putting out?

How does the rear suspention work?

The rear end is not very nice at all, just a bit too high otherwise it might look ok, i'd also have the end of the cans cut back so they dont protrude past the seat line, maybe just the ends of them but no more.

But saying that, the bike is possibly the best project i've seen on here.

Very nice! Thumbs Up Mr. Green

I actually just came in my pants...

Please don't get rid of the fairings, they look amazing and it's the ultimate RS sleeper. What did you get the rear-end off of?

Can I have a go? Mr. Green

Now that is what i call engineering!
Were the hell did you start Laughing
Those reverse cylinders also benefit the engine performance wise i bet. As the thrust side of the piston is now acting on the other side of the barrell meaning better engine life and compression??

Not really that hard with a 2 stroke. You just pretty much turn the barrels round.

I know it's ben said, but it's mint apart from the tail. It's at completely the wrong angle. Bring it straighter so that if you extend a line from the top of the tank it would line up with the top of the tail. Thumbs Up

Just seen this thread:

Hi again, just put everyone straight i didnt do this but i will start to change some of the bike as i own it for longer.

Re were the guy started, he took a nice basic old matching numbers rd400 and turned it into a cafe racer sort of (below)

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/paint.jpg

The insert was his first go ten years ago, he then fancied a change and had the kind of job where he could spend some time on a cad system to sort a modern frame. The first thing was to put the old frame in a jig to get the geometry right. The he cut the head off TIG weld onto the CAD steel frame. Some images below that walk you through this stage, i have to say the guy is amazing.

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/Copy2ofDSC00590.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/CopyofDSC00621.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/CopyofDSC00619.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/09ee_1.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/CopyofDSC00617.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/0a96_1-1.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/CopyofDSC00623.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/0b41_1.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/CopyofDSC00627.jpg

So all the angles etc are just right, I was told about 30-40 days were spent just designing the frame and getting it all ok before spending one and half days building the frame.

Ill do my best to cover the engine later as thats pretty cool turning the head round etc.

Re USD forks, ive looked at this but cost and weight come into this and yes they will look tops but it handels fine with no need of a stearing damp etc.

Rear end plastics are just cheap GRP racing plastics of a yamaha 2000 ish YZR500 GP bike.

One last thing, the gut who did all this did do most of and didnt just pay someone (a bit like me buying it of him) to do it and most of this bike was made and put together in a shed, I think thats amazing.

Hi Big Ham

I didnt even see the bike in the flesh before i bought it, i new i needed it, not wanted but needed. Yes i was pretty pleased at the price, ive been offered a few quid more for it and i think it could be broken a sold for more than i paid but i dont think ill ever sell. Although my perfect bike (I like 2 strokes) is this.

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/8b3a_12.jpg

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/thetentman/1eed_12.jpg

Or if not this i would like one of those 500cc 2 stroke gamma based GP reps that some people have put together. Im afraid im not bothered about classic, mint bikes. I love looking at them and i like to look at choppers, well all bikes but its modded two strokes for me!!!

Because yours got tons and tons of attention from the young ones who were saying things along the lines of 'OMFG that is fucking amazing" "Can't believe it's the same bike, such a transformation" etc, when in fact it pretty much was all bolt on mods (other than the gearbox transplant).

The way I read the comment was it was directed more at those who adulated your project as the best thing ever rather than you for doing it. As in 'Wake up people - this is an impressive project, this has taken extraordinary skill and persistence to complete, do you see the difference?"

So yeah, I don't think it was aimed at you.

To be fair aren't most project bolt on?

Surely then, even Craig's VFR400 Project is Bolt on?

Fair enough he replaced the fairings but it's still bolt on stuff.

Yes, that's why the ones that aren't are the interesting ones.

Hmmm, a lot of Craig's stuff was custom made, therefore is not 'bolt on'. Bolt on is when anyone can buy the part off the shelf and just 'bolt on'. Craig's wasn't like that.

Craig did a restoration that incorporated customising the bike to his taste.
