How feasible would it be to pick up a decent dual-purpose (or at least something that's not so dirt orientated that I can't ride it on the road) for a bit of green laning for under a grand?

Not expecting minters or anything but obviously has to be a runner and really rather not do much work to it.
Preferably something smaller as I'll be learning and it's easier on the insurance.

Any recommendations?

Are you talking -125? or 125+
Are you learning to do your test, or learning yourself.

If its for a test (prov) somthing like a Dr/dt/ts 125

If your looking at full licence, theres loads, Dr 350+ or dr-z supermoto, you could get somthing like a CCM with 'tard and crosser wheels, or even a ktm.

there is a few out there, have a look on the net at what may suit you.

good luck.

DR350 and KLR250 both have a lot to recommend them. Not too heavy offroad, not too focused on.

Having been down a similar road, you will probably find that the basement price for a fully road legal 'bike with an MoT is around £1000.

Be wary of 'bike cheaper than that, as off tarmac use is hard on a 'bike, and even good ones tend to be money pits.

Incidentally, I had a Suzuki DR350S and it was a good starter 'bike. I've sold it and got a KTM now.

Definitely another vote for a DR350 here. Cheap, capable off road and enough power to have fun blasting round single track lanes.

Very few for £1000,xr250 will be enough ,anything that needs a couple of tyres ,oil/filter/plug etc going to go into £1250 straight away, thats without MOT/Tax/Insurance,first time wheel bearings need doing yer looking at £20 to diy,id save up a bit more or you ll be on a shoe string,realistically.£1500 buys you something to ride and enjoy ,not buy and fix.

i bought a road legal ttr250 for £460 off ebay

its a bit tatty but is fine for me in town and off road

if i did a lot of mileage i would probably have to start replacing things that are on their way out

but so far i've only had to replace a clutch cable and that was £20

a 250 4 stroke is plenty of power for green laning, but maybe slightly lacking on the road

one thing to watch for, is if they are offroad tyres, you really need to be careful braking on the road, as its easy to lock the front wheel and lose it on a bend

it might even be worth getting another front wheel and putting a more road biased tyre on it and using that when not doing offroad

Should be able to get a decent DR600 or KLR600 for that sorta money.

The DR has a only a few more kilos than the DR350 and a little more power, but has a load more midrange.

Can handle green lanes ok and I didn't have a problem on small mx style jumps (not brave enough for bigger rather than the bike).

The 650 models got a few more kilos, but leccy start as well.

XR400 is also supposed to be a good choice and I could be tempted by one sometime.
