ive just bought the bike, insured it through bennetts but they say its gonna be friday by the time i get the cover note.is there a way i can tax it before then?
i tryed online but it says the tax disk will only be sent to the adress on the log book, which is still in the previous owners name.

post office wont do it even though i am actually insured, they cant phone my insurance company and check Crying or Very sad .

???????
any ideas?

just wondering: Rolling Eyes

ive scanned my cover note in for my previous bike.if i could change the details on it to my new policy number and bike reg would i get into trouble for it?
technically it would be legit insurance.?

I was in exactly the same situation as you when I bought my bike, took about 7 days for the insurance docs to come through. I just rode it untaxed.

Simple answer is that you can't.

Many times I've tried to tax a legit insured / MOT'd etc vehicle and have had to wait for docs to come through.

The police can instantly find out if your vehicle is insured but the post office can't. Daft really, because technically you can tax a vehicle which has been insured at some point with the cert, even if you have cancelled that policy.

The only other way I've found is to use a business policy which covers all vehicles IF you know anyone that can lend one to you.

Problem is that only some Post Offices will accept it, (I don't think they are supposed to). Most say that there has to be a name on the cert that matches the V5, but I have managed to tax a couple of vehicles this way before.

Oh well, you're buggered then. Sad

It's well annoying when this type of thing stops you from using a new vehicle, but Sod's Law states that if you go out on it you will get pulled, and no amount of saying 'well it would of been taxed if I was able to' will get the Police off your back.

Try and resist temptation Laughing

How Long?

Motorcycle Direct have always had my Docs delivered the next day. This is 2 years worth of cover, first one was done Sunday evening about 5pm, the docs were here next morning, the most recent was a phone call at 3pm to have the Docs here next morning.

Tax it on the DVLA website with your debit/credit card.

They check the insurers database so you dont need the cover note.

Dont worry about displying the tax disc as the fuzz will run your plate and see your taxed-youll possibly get a bollocking for not displaying but they are unlikely to want to generate the paperwork if you are taxed.

I assume you didn't read the OP.......

They only deliver to the address on the V5. If you have no contact with them then that will take even longer...
Also not uncommon for the ins co's to take a while to update database.

Got access to a fax machine ? If you have get it faxed over.

Cant see the problem myself. NO you cant get tax because of one reason or the other, but you have a fully legal car!!!! Confused

Where is the difficulty in choosing the legal car over an illegal bike?

If the OP is anything like me, it's not a case of needing transport it's wanting to ride their new toy Very Happy

I was in the exact same situation when I got my 1st bike... I just rang the insurance company and spun them a line about needing to pick the bike up from the person I bought it from and they were getting upset and threatening to cancel the sale to me. When it looked like they may loose a sale too they got it sent special delivery so the certificate arrived the next day Mr. Green

Meh, I'd just ride it.

It's your bike, it's insured (now, not from when the tax starts!) and when you get tax it'll be backdated to the beginning of the month.

You actually *want* to give the government money, but they won't let you. So you can't use a bike you're paying to insure for a few days while the insurers and the post office arse about? Worse if you actually work for a living and can't go down the PO until Saturday? The taxing system is spectacularly badly thought out.

In the unlikely event of you being pulled, explain that lot. If you get a producer, your covernote will have arrived by then and you'll have got tax. No worries.

Depends what mood the copper is in if your get pulled, its upto 1000 fine for no tax! - Is it really worth it?

Also isn't your insurance invalid if your bike isnt taxed on the road! Thumbs Up

They really should get a cover note to you almost next day - thats the whole idea - a temporay note while they prepare the full policy document.
As some have said already, if they're on the ball the full documents should be done in 2 or 3 days usually.

No.

Personally I would ride it anyway. If you get pulled, just explain the situation. It's your choice. In some parts of the country they are clamping or taking away untaxed vehicles but you'd have to be very unlucky for that to happen to you...

Bloody stupid is that......

A email copy would be better.

Seem to remember that one of the online ins co had a copy that you could print off online.

I always use a copy for taxing bike and car and have never had a issue, mind you lazer printer is pretty good.

Think it's Swift that do the whole deal on-line I tried them but found them very unhelpful in the end I cancelled and went to Directline, this was for the car by-the-way.
