Lets say my 'friend' is looking at getting some sort of enduro maybe, is the DRz400 a good choice (2002-2004 platish)

He is a lazy bugger and could be doing up to 120 miles in one outing on it, are the service intervals OK ?

also are there any good bikes he can get for around the same money

(under £2k)[/u]

Service intervals are fine - listed as something like 4k, best to make it a bit shorter if you're giving it some abuse.

I presume you've read my CCM review, if not read it. Then buy a CCM Razz.

For the DRZ, try and go for the E model.

They are pretty decent 'do anything' bikes.

The CCM has better suspension is the main bit - would cost quite a lot to upgrade the DRZ to CCM levels.

Brakes shouldn't be a big issue for off roading - but do make a difference with the SM wheels on.

However, you can definitely get cheaper DRZs, even considering CCMs with just trail wheels. Look at a similar age though, and often the CCM is a similar price, despite offering more.

A look round on ebay and biketrader and a few forums, cant find any 404s in my price range.
a few with the 600cc engine, but also noticed its a rotax engine and my experience with them is eerrrmmm less than satisfactory.
but then again im a right noobie when it comes to offroading would the WP suspention come of use ?

I can definitely tell the difference between say my CRM and the Husaberg (same suspension as the CCM) off roading. There will be less of a difference comparing the DRZ, but it should still mean you get that bit plusher ride and may handle jumps etc a bit better too.

The DRZ should do you fine for the mo, though.

If you want to do any serious trail riding make sure you get the "E" model. Forget the "S" unless you just want a road bike.

I rode an "E" with Redtread in the Spanish mountains and they also had a couple of CCM's. Same engine but the CCM's would need a mini service every lunchtime! The E's are almost bullet-proof apart from the well documented output shaft problem. Easily remedied with stainless spacer and new seals.

Why was that? Were they standard?
CCM recommend you follow the DR-Z workshop manual for servicing the engine.

Ive been reading up on the difference between an S and an E
Longer supframe
about 6 less BHP
Road gearing
road bias tyres
bit more weight
Id probably be happy with an S if it came up at the right price as would i be happy with a ccm404, plus looking about you can get a shed load of bits and bobs for Drzs which is handy.

Just the difference in weight will probably make a reasonable difference, so I'd go with the E model of the DRZ over the S given the chance.

They were a lot newer than the DRZ's, standard and well looked after, serviced every ride. Although The CCM's have the same basic engine, they are are not exactly the same state of tune, I think they quote slightly more bhp than the DRZ. I suspect they have slightly more compression, different valves, cams etc. They weren't smoking but seemed to be using a lot of oil.

Standard CCMs use the DRZ-E engine pretty much as you get it in the DRZ-E as far as I know.
I definitely haven't heard of people having any issues on the CCM in that regards that you wouldn't get on a DRZ-E.

The CC404E has a little more power, but it's basically just had a few 'mods' done that a lot of people do to the DRZ without problems. Ie, the airbox is a bit freer flowing and it's got a freer flowing exhaust on as standard.

there lots of S models but not many E models that are within 200 miles really.

Would whacking on an exhaust and bigger sprocket make it slightly simular to an E, with of course knobblier tyres.

Gonna hold out a little longer anyway.

It's the weight that's going to make more of a difference off road.
You don't really need more power than a XR250 has for green-laning, so that shouldn't be an issue.

No. Offroad weight is killer, the E is over 10 kilos lighter than the S, and you'll never get that back without seriously setting about the s with a hacksaw. The E is very different to the S, here's a list i posted a while ago:

Quote:
Pre 2003 the S and E had different suspension, after they had the same. Currently the difference stands at:

10+ kilos in weight
About 8 horsepower
Stubby rear subframe on the E (weak, no luggage, no pillions)
No speedo on the E
Carb ($1200 aftermarket to get the E spec carb)
Cams
Head gasket (higher compression ratio)
No passenger pegs on the E (S uses one as exhaust bracket, so you can't just remove them)
No fan on the E
plastic tank on the E, metal on the S (both tank and locking cap)
Vacuum fuel tap on the S, manual on the E
no rim locks on S
Different OEM gearing, 15/44 S, 14/47 E
E has bigger header pipe

General thumper forum concensus on the matter is that it is easier to roadify the E than it is to muddy the S. The S will always be heavier, though you can definitely pull the power of an E out of an S motor, it just gets expensive quickly. Main issue with the s is that being a dual sport it isn't that marvellous at either, it can't really off road without modification (gearing, tyres) and such change make it a dog on the road.

So there, lol.

Yes. It will mean it's even harder for you to pick it out of the mud for the tenth time that day, never mind generally muscling it about Smile.
