Hi,

We have 400cc Burgman. (fuel injected scooter)
I normally get 65-70mpg. It suddenly dropped to 35mpg.

What could be the reason?

(Rpm / speed is same as before)

Cheers.

Perhaps try a different petrol station? Could be some dodgy fuel?

Filthy air filter? Hole in the exhaust, tyres too soft, added a top box (if that's possible), dodgy choke (if it's the fuel injected type that still has a cable choke).

Did you do anything to it just before it dropped?

Yes, it has a rev counter. Idle is the same as before. 2k with auto choke. 1.6k without.

Tyres roll freely.

No I didn't. 2 Months ago I dropped the bike on its left side. It was fine since last week.

I'll check those connections if the feckin rain decides to stop at some point. Laughing

Exhaust is good. Air filter is 3 months old. Checked the tyre pressure yesterday, it was ok. Choke is auto and it works ok. (Idle rpm is the same as before)

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll check every single connection now. Exhaust, fuel line, petrol tank etc..

The weather was decent today so I stripped the bike down. But I couldn't find any leaks. Sad Ran the engine for 30 minutes, sniffed every single connection like a police dog. No joy...
Exhaust is good, air filtre is good, brakes are fine, tyre pressure 30 and 40psi.

Any advice?

Assuming you use a full 13 litres and petrol is costing you £1.25 (filling the tank costing around £16.25), you should be getting around 200 miles if you say your MPG is 70. Now it is only 35 MPG, which is 100 miles. Does that sound about right, Caylx?

Last time I filled up I got 95 miles. I normally get around 180-200.

I do not think it will be fuel prices though, especially since it only started a week ago. Unless he were buying fuel at 70p per litre, in which, can I have some!?

And roughly how much did it cost you when you last filled your tank?

Faulty o2 sensor in the exhaust Thumbs Up

Had a few Versys riders who have encountered the same MPG dropping like a stone. Replacing the sensor has cured the issue.

Could be its just fouled up.

I have noticed that not only bike, but car is also returning less mpg at the moment. Wondering if oil co's have been messing with the petrol and reduced its calorific value.......

This makes a lot of sense as I get consistent 35mpg. I believe the problem is electrical.
O2 sensors cost like £35 pounds.
Is there a way to tell it is defected? Rather than buying/trying one Very Happy

It's got back to normal now. 3.9 litres / 64 miles (gps miles)
Only thing I changed is filling up at BP instead of Shell.

More updates;

The problem occurred again so I unplugged the oxygen sensor. Went for a 40 mile ride (30-50-70mph roads). Voila! Back to 70mpg.

I think it (used to) does this when I do longer journeys.

Now I have a new problem. The dashboard is lit up like a Christmas tree!
Should I buy a new oxygen sensor btw?

Hi

Oxygen sensors can normally be tested with a multimeter, but normally an old style one with a needle. Connect the meter over the sensor in voltage mode. A healthy sensor should vary about a point, while sick ones normally sit bang on a single voltage (this is why you want a needle type multimeter as it makes it easier to see the deflection).

All the best

Keith

I have just had the same problem. Filled up at BP and did several journeys of under a mile for a few weeks. Managed to get about 70 miles. Filled up at Shell and did a 110 mile journey and still have two fifths left.

Same problem again. Evil or Very Mad
It was back to 70mpg for 100ish miles than got back to 35mpg again.

So far I have;

-sniffed/checked connections
-checked the exhaust
-unplugged the O2 sensor

Can it be fuel relay or something like that?
