Thought I'd show you all my homemade grunge/chain cleaning brushes. Came across one of these on the net and figured I could make one just as good for next to nothing

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/public/r6KfTApZZLDp36hmzB4A3WM5jgiQm-IZZ3BdBncqyB3hgjC47JyFzbNJ1U8B8nGAr2UJC-Bjn9yjqxHdeedcDWHB_spZKNWP47jq-JYOMdAklg4fDwzwjPPveMbMTc1ZR3EI_Yz0-hYa5wJf4pyDMfbmqQpb

My ones are messy but cost me 15p each to make, both slightly different as I was playing with the blow torch.

The building materials are 3 of the 10p for two toothbrushes from Asda/Tesco/Wilkinsons etc etc. Other materials are a mini blow torch (cigarette lighter would be ok) and a good two part epoxy like araldite or JB weld is optional but it does make it a lot simpler (and safer).

Not going to go into too much detail as it is pretty obvious:

https://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af271/DonnyBrago/DSC06331.jpg

Left one - chop all three heads off the toothbrushes, use the blow torch to heat the plastic handles and bend them to shape, hold them in shape until they cool, use the epoxy to glue the heads on and the handles together, leave it to dry.

Right one - I wanted to make one without any glue by melting the plastic of the third handle to use as a filler and not cutting off all three heads - It can be done but it is simpler to use the epoxy.

My suggestion would be to do something in the middle of the two, i.e. keep the heads on the two tooth brushes, bend the necks using the blow torch, glue the handles together then glue the third head in the middle. Try and get the distance between the heads just narrower than your chain.

Either way costs 15p a brush rather than a tenner to buy one, coupled with some paraffin we have some cheap chain cleaning Thumbs Up. Before anyone complains they are messy, they are for cleaning motorcycle chains not scrubbing the Queen's clunge.

Disclaimer: If you are stupid enough to hurt yourself doing this, you probably deserved it and I will not be held liable.

Yeah, used the one on the left earlier - worked really well Thumbs Up .

I used to struggle to get the far side of the chain without sticking my arm through my wheel, much easier now.

Nice one like that. I wounder if there is any way that it could be fixed permanently, as I have a Scott Oiler. The pair together could be a great idea.

Tescos,
two brushes for .10p
A little tape a a peice of paper folded over.

https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/chain_brush.jpg

When taping it make sure the bristles are in eachother as this means you have enough compression betweent them to get into the gaps nicely when doing the top/bottom of the chain Smile

Investment:
Money - .10p
Time - 30 seconds
Usefullness - muchos!

That one i just made for one use but spend another 40-50 seconds taping it up nicely and it should be good for many uses if wiped off afterwards Smile

Its .10p... there is no excuse for chain abuse!

I just bought a chain brush for a fiver because I am not a pikey. Laughing I think the Bristles on the tooth brush would not be stiff enough to shift more subborn grime.

I've always used cheap toothbrushes on my chain, if you use paraffin as the cleaning solvent then it takes very little agitation to remove the grime. I'd be wary of using very stiff bristles on a chain as I have seen reports of damaged O rings, you could however make a brush using firmer toothbrushes if you could lower yourself to pikey status Mr. Green Thumbs Up .

Out of interest how stiff are the bristles in the purpose made chain brushes?

not sure about the purpose ones but the tesco's blue and red stripe brushes arnt to stiff but do get betweent he links Smile

I have seen some value kitchen brushes that are pretty stiff and dense which i figured would be good for engine/wheels etc (.45p).

A toilet brush, full 360 degree motion! Awesome for getting in and around the shock with much longer brissles than the kitchen brush (.85p'ish)

Can't say i miss wilco :p

Very, they are pretty thick too so I don't think they would be able to get in the gap for the o-rings. each birsle is about 0.75mm thick.

Did you get the micrometer out for that measurement?
