Hi all,

My bandit runs and rides great but if you leave it for any more than about 5 minutes, it wont start very easily.

It will spin over nice and quick but wont catch and needs throttle before it actually fires up. (No choke being used)

If you turn it off, then start back up straight away - no problem at all. But if you leave her to cool down even for a short amount of time, the bike doesnt want to know.

It's got an Akra can but other than that no mods.

Bike: '98 Bandit 1200

Thanks, Ant

Does it start ok from cold?

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most of the carbed bikes I've ever owned needed a tiny amount of throttle to make them start. Never really bothered me.

I'd only really worry if you have to hold it at full throttle to start it.

It starts great from cold, fires straight up on full choke and quickly settles with no choke.

I dont know wether this is relevant but i've only really noticed it do it, if the bike has been idling then turned off, then re-started after a short time.

I'll have to give the bike a good run, then try it. Havent had it very long you see. Smile

It may just be the way it is (hopefully), ive not had an IL4 before.

Cheers, Ant

any hot engine will require a bit of throttle. Injection bikes, (ie not carb) don't have this problem.

How much throttle are you applying?

If its a small blip to say 2-3k then that's no problem and is totally normal for carbed bikes. If its 6k or something then you might need to look at stuff.

What's the idle speed? It's possible it's a tad low.

Yeah, its not a massive amount of throttle. Just a little blip really.

The bike has been stood some time, but has had carb work (apparently Wink), and when i got it - it was popping at idle, but the idle was a steady and smooth 1200 rpm as it advises in haynes manual.

However, ive done a good few miles on it over the weekend and all of a sudden it stopped popping BUT when i went out on the bike, as the bike warmed up the idle speed increased from around 1400 rpm fluctuating to 2000 rpm.

I got home and it was idling at 2k (40odd mile journey so plenty warm)

Wouldnt drop despite cooling down a little, so i dropped the idle screw to 1200 again.

Took her out again for around 10 miles and no problems, but i havent tried again since then (at work now)... will try tonight though and see if its any better.

Im not sure wether this makes sense and/or is possible but could the popping been the bike needing a good ride/blow out, and now its stopped the idle has somehow increased (adjusted in first place to compensate for popping maybe, idk?) and then required a little bit of adjustment.

Anyway, i'll take her out tonight and see what happens. Cheers for the help!

Ant

Yeah I understand.

If it was me I'd get some redex fuel system cleaner and run that through. Then balance the carbs and you're away.

1200 rpm is good. Would you describe the idle as lumpy? Or smooth?

I'd say smooth - the tacho seems to stray but only a very small flicker. Will rev smoothly from idle no hesitation.

I've got a carb balancer so i will do that, and chuck some redex in aswell cant hurt.

I wonder if its worth draining the float bowls off and re-filling or not?

Cheers, Ant Thumbs Up

Okay that sounds good.

Make sure you run the fuel cleaner through first though, as if there is any debris in the jets you idle will be lumpy after its gone through like I didn't do Laughing

I stuck a whole bottle in 1 tank on the fazer, even though it said not to. Made a world of difference!

You could try draining the bowls, might be worth a shot hoping that it will take any small particles out.

Ok great - thanks! I'll pick a bottle up on the way home.

I'll put it in tonight and ride around on it until the weekend when i can get to work on it and balance the carbs etc. But hopefully might even see a difference by then.

Hi

My first thoughts with a bike being a pain to start without some throttle from hot after sitting for a few minutes would be fuel vapourisation (but not sure the Bandit has any issue with this - was a pain with twin choke Webers on a car though) or that a needle valve is sticking open and flooding the bike a little when parked up (can only flood a little at the vacuum fuel tap won't allow fuel to flow with the engine running, so just the small amount sat in the fuel lines).

All the best

Keith

Hi guys, I put the redex in and drained off the carbs - i also checked the air filter.

I found that theres a K&N lifetime filter in there, so im guessing that along with the akra can it would need upjetting. Im not sure if it has been or not Confused

... But what i do know is that it makes a regular and frequent popping noise at idle.

Could the bike be running too lean do you think? Is it worth me buying a standard air filter for it?

Also, with the hard starting, i also bought some new plugs and now it seems to be bang on. Its just this bloody popping that is getting on my nerves now and slow speed riding isnt as smooth as it should be i dont think, it kind of stutters along and then shoots off as i increase the revs.

Thanks, Ant Thumbs Up

What colour were the plugs when you pulled them?

You are ideally looking for a tan/light brown.
White would signal trouble, black would be running rich.

Concerned if they are white, black is ok I guess, wasting fuel.. but not harming the engine as much as a white plug will.. Laughing
Does it pop if you say, rag it in 2nd and close the throttle?

The centres were pretty white/greyish.

This leads to lean running yeah? I think i'll stick a standard air filter in and hope for the best. Dont want to do any damage Neutral

Just took a quick pic of the old plugs, excuse the quality.

And the K&N but not sure of any re-jet, so assume running lean causing popping etc. ???

Where's the starter located on this bike, how old is it? If it cranks slow when on a hot start, then you need to clean the starter of carbon build-up, especially on the + wire from the battery.

It spins over nice and quick all the time - the starting problem has actually seemed to go now, but the popping is still there. I think i may be running too lean caused by the K&N, hopefully a std filter will improve thing?

Cheers, Ant

possibly.

Second picture of the plug doesn't look to bad.

You could try the standard filter. Bandits don't seem to be jetted very rich.

Chris had a simular problem. Read his turbo thread and somewhere in there is the popping problem.

One looks rich the others lean.

Will need upjetting and the carb on the rich cylinder will need looking at to see why its so rich.
