PostPosted: 08:14 - 15 Jun 2012    Post subject: Help identifying this sidecar please!? Reply with quote

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and am posting on behalf of the missus who has recently had a rush of blood to the head and bought a divvy 600 sidecar combo. I rode this yesterday and have to say I was disturbed at first but am starting to enjoy it myself.

It badly needs a cover and windshield. Does anybody have a clue about the make/model of the sidecar and where we could source a replacement canopy or windshield? We're based in Derbyshire. Any help would be much appreciated. Photo link below:

Fantastic fast response thank you. Looks like watsonian-squire is the place to go then. Finding a screen might prove difficult I think.

You're a genius sir. SL1 image search is definitely it. Feel a call direct to squire about legacy parts coming on.

If your happy for it to not look perfect it should be fairly easy to fab something up out of polycarbonate sheet and aluminium.

To be fair, it would probably end up wrapped around someone's head if I attempted fabrication. Let the relentless internet trawl begin. Very grateful, have been stuck on velorex searches for the last 24 hours.

FWIW Squire list the screen as NLA - no longer available. Not such a bad thing really, list price for others varies between 180 and 500 euros. Shocked

Wow, that sort of price renders the concept of cheap hacking a bit redundant, especially on a dodgy 98 divvy. Everything else is sound, so effort would be rewarded just not the cost. A quick fab project might be in order after all.

This pdf file might be of some use to see how it should look, page 21.

For a long time i was considering adding a sidecar to my GT550 in order to have transport with my Tiny Person too and from school etc. I couldn't believe how expensive they were Shocked There were a few bits and bobs kicking around on ebay but even buying various pieces and hoping my limited skills would arrange them into something safe and legal would cost a fair bit.

But ebay may be worth a look just in case a screen turns up. Other than that a fab project is likely to be your best bet. I found some sidecars for sale on various classic bike type forums and they may be a good place to look for ideas from people who've knocked stuff up themselves Thumbs Up

The dodgy div just doesn't justify a massive investment so you're absolutely right. The whole thing, bike+sidecar, cost £700, so we were never aiming for elegance anyway!

That was a good price and not an awful lot more that it was going to cost me just to buy the sidecar and attempt (than most likely cock-up and have to resort to garage costs) to fit it to my existing bike.

Besides, elegance is overrated, style and character are much more important Wink

I think we're leaning toward the character angle, style is a moot point and dependent upon how much you squint I guess.

Maybe it's the angular styling (very 70s) or the colour but it does remind me of the old Bond Bug (IIRC effectively a Reliant Robin with a funky fibreglass shell).

ooooooo i was all excited when i saw the price of that until i saw it was in Ireland Crying or Very sad I hadn't trawled a lot on gumtree and ebay was restrictive as i had no transport at all at the time i was looking.

The car is saving us a lot of cash compared to the buses and my main aim with the spare money is getting the bike back on the road. But this will lead to a situation where we are strapped for cash but wasting money running two means of transport. Travelling a bit to collect something that cheap and ultimately being able to get rid of the car completely is an attractive idea Thinking

Excellent link, thank you Thumbs Up

The gratitude is all ours. First post on here and we receive this massively comprehensive response from everyone. Brilliant forum. We almost considered registering with the federation of sidecars forum but I'm fairly certain we'd have been laughed out of the place. As it is, a complete newbie request for info about sidecars elicits a brill set of replies. Re james bond look-a-likes, this is currently on the bay which looks just like it:

Sweet bike, admittedly we're not quite at that standard in terms of style.

Here's a link to the divvy in action on the tube. It's a quick eyeview vid at shotgun for a few hundred yards Smile

That's so fab! Did you buy it complete or fit the sidecar yourself?

I'm completely derailing this thread, sorry 1yoghurt! Embarassed

I reckon that body shape lends itself very nicely to a DIY effort.

Make sure you post up a thread in Show & Tell detailing your progress.

The sidecar was bought off a chap who sold his Jawa 350 to someone who didn't want the sidecar on it. I made up the brackets to fit to the Armstrong and it worked quite well. It's now off the Armstrong and I fitted it to my own Jawa 350.

Thank you.

I have a million questions but i will save them for when the bike is sorted and the sidecar is a proper possibility. I love the idea of being able to shuttle Tiny Cornish around in one and getting rid of the car completely Cool
