can you inform the DVLA of the color change of a bike without having to send off the V5?

It's not clear (without a V5 in front of me) whether section 7 is a removable part of the V5 or whether you'll have to send of the whole thing but that's the bit you need to fill out.

because they just print off a new V5 and send the new one to you and destroy the old one?

its not like they tip-ex the details and write on it. its a printed document which has to be re-printed.

still, thanks for the information guys

they will want the old one, other wise some shady characters would steal a bike fitting the description of the v5 sell it with old v5 and then keep the new v5 and original bike. why else do they want the v5 for change of owner?

i guess if you wanted to you could apply for a 'new' v5, but not sure if you can request a colour change at the same time. you would have to pay the relevant fee though.

It's a no-cost change if you send the old one back. I'm not sure why you wouldn't. If you've lost it, there's no free way to get a new one that I'm aware of.

What colour are you going for? They look nice in metallic bronze. Wink

You have to send it back because then if you've lost it they can charge you £16 for a replacement.

I have sent one back three times informing them my bike was now green, not black. Each time it came back with the colour as black. I gave up in the end. It's still green, they still have it as black.

Oh, no argument there, they're incompetent buffoons.

Get proof of postage - that doesn't cost you anything. Scan a copy, you can use the reference number to tax online if they don't send you a reminder.

Fee is £25 now, has been for a while Sad

Also, I've had problems with them updating items, Including a engine conversion that put it into a different tax bracket, Even though I was willing to pay the extra tax, they sent the logbook back twice with the same cc, and then the 3rd time with the cc incorrect (too large)

Eventually sorted it after 6months or so of fucking around.

Did you inform your insurance, and if so how did they react? Increase in insurance, admin fee for change, etc?

I have never been asked for the V5 when buying tax. MOT, INS and the reminder letter.

I didn't. It wasn't a custom paint job that increased the value or nickability of the bike, mine just went from black to bronze. Since I hadn't insured a black bike, I didn't see how the colour change was material.

No I didnt come to think of it......

But I cant see how a colour change from red/white to black/white could increase the insurance Thinking
