Image viewing

When attaching an image to a post, sometimes it gets shown, and sometimes it's just an attachment. I can't spot a pattern, as to whether it's .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, nor does it seem to be on the image size, as items around 100k have been shown, whereas items as little as 20k have been only shown as an attachment. It doesn't seem to be based on the image dimensions, either.

Any clues to the rules of whether something will be shown or not?

It's based on attachment size I believe.

Yes - It's based on the physical dimensions of the image and the size in kb.
