Hi all,

My mother got this text earlier from "UKBA". Anybody seen anything similar? Whats the scam here? Do they claim to lodge an appeals process and charge you money for the privilege (and thereby get your CC details) or something?

Ahaha oh god you've got to be one paranoid motherf*cker to fall for that.

I'm guessing you've got it right. You call them, they make it sound bad, then after a bit of iffing and affing they say "well, we COULD try and appeal it...but it won't be easy, are you sure sir?" [in a heavy heavy indian or nigerian accent by the way]

They then ask you for your credit card details.

You then never hear from them again.

You are then poor. Thumbs Up

Except the Inland Revenue contact centre phone numbers are all 0844 as well and they keep you waiting for hours AND hang up most of their calls as well.

https://www.direct-number.co.uk/hmrc-helpline/

Its a nice little earner for them as well because they keep doing fishing expeditions and keep accusing people of stuff asking you to clear it up by calling the said ££ number

The number doesn't show up on saynoto0870 or any of the usual reverse lookup sites. I think you can safely ignore it and call it a scam. Wink

If your mum has genuine concerns over her immigration status, or her visa/passport/whatever really has expired, or is going to expire soon, then of course she should be worried. Otherwise fuck that, just ignore it, obviously.

Nope, born and bread in the uk, as were my grandparents, great grand parents etc.

I just wondered if it could be a genuine UKBA message gone to the wrong number (Very unlikely) or if anybody had come across this scam before.

Don't give them the excuse.

Tell your mum to get packing.

It's not just unlikely, it's not possible. The world isn't dystopian enough (yet) for the government to be able to send you a text message saying "Dear Mr X, due to your recent speeding violations, you have been allotted an execution slot at 1100 hours tomorrow at Execution Platform A13-H. Please do not be late. You are expected to cover the costs of the execution which are £101.50, failure to pay before the execution will result in the fee doubling."

To be fair it is quite a good scam. Hats off to the thinkers behind that one. Also, their heads off would be good too, because they're cunts for tricking people.

Potential immigration hostility aside, think of how many people are gonna get this message and take it very seriously - even if their existence in the UK is totally legit - and then lose a fortune to some fucker who isn't even connected to the government. Bastards.

4p per minute they'll get from a scam by keeping someone on hold.

Must be credit card details involved in the call.

It's actually "Please call to discus".

I am the General Secretary of the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association (see www.ilpa.org.uk) and I came across this thread while looking at the internet. As you will see from the post on the home page of www.ilpa.org.uk these messages really are being sent by Capita on behalf of the UK Border Agency. My experience, like yours, is that mistakes are being made in who they are being sent to. Journalists have reported this - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19637409 (and would, I am sure, be most interested in speaking to those affected.)

I was particularly interested in the thread as I have been sayng to the UK Border Agency that no one is going to believe that a text like this comes from a Government department. Those affected may wish to consider making a formal compliant to the Agency.

It's akin to the police sending out random texts saying:

"We are the Police. We reckon you gone and dun a murder. Please phone us on 0898 999 999 to tell us if it's a fair cop and we'll explain where to hand yourself in."

Brilliant. So if you're you're an illegal, Crapita will now send you a warning that it's time to change your address and get a new phone number?

I'll bet the numpty behind that bright idea gets a big, fat, taxpayer-funded fucking bonus.
