Slightly unrelated but you cannot make a folder named "CON" anywhere: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/con-folder-name.shtml

Edit: This is definitely true for XP, I'm not sure about other Microsoft OS's.

Confirmed. Does not work on 7.

Huh, how interesting.

there are certain restricted codes in windows that won't allow certain file / folder names as they are reserved code words
there is also some coder "Jinks" in windows so if you do certain things you get unexpected results

Does one of them have a space after the name?

CON is the device name for console. People who remember DOS and batch files might well remember the command 'copy con' - the editor for people that could type confidently and accurately. Razz

It's still there in Windows 7. Shocked

I noticed this quite recently too, the wonders of Win 7 (doesn't work in any other version I've tried, don't know about Vista though).

I still use that on occasion for whipping up a quick batch file.

I took that to our IT Techs today and they are not at all happy. It was like a child finding out that the Tooth Fairy is not real, their belief system had been challenged and they did not know what to do.

Like Chris said one will have a space after the name, the old alt+0160 trick.

Easy way to see if it's a space after the name is to highlight both together:

Ok this just got weirder.... I was trying to take a shot of it with both highlighted but I managed to drop the one into the folder above. I then tried to drop it back to where it came from but Windows will not let me as there already is a folder called S******* there!

Problem solved!

I would now run disk check. Right-click that drive in My Computer - properties - tools - check now.

Do the alt+0160 thing then it will go back. IT can pat themselves on the back for fixing it then. Either that or it will properly weird them out Very Happy

There really are only a few options.

Unprintable characters in the folder name
Corrupt file system
Juntions/Symlinks hiding the real path

Two folders/files with truly identical names cannot exist next to each other in a healthy filesystem.

What folder is it in?

A quick read up suggests that if you had something like C:\Users\<myUserId>\Documents\Symantic and C:\Users\Public\Documents\Symantics and you were using the Library view, both folders would appear under the same name. They are both at different locations, however.

If they both truly are at the same location with the same name... move the contents from one in to the other and then delete the empty folder. Job jobbed!

I haven't tried this yet, but the only thing I can think of is that the folders may have been created with very slightly different attributes.

Even still though, I'm glad I don't have to write it up, that would drive me insane.

There was an easter egg about typing something into notepad then opening it again and the text changes, was creepy

I still very occasionally use it to see what's in various directories (even if I have no idea what it is

I used to love making batch files, I made one that selfduplicated itself with random file names, if you ran it it would crash your PC guaranteed

I was gonna put it in startup on someones PC Laughing

When I first seen this thread my first thought was some kind of virus causing the duplicate folder names.... not as sure now.

Anyway, what was that about not being able to give folders certain names?

You can use any folder name you want through the dos prompt:

md .\folder name\
