Entry level SLR and a kit lens.

450D with the 18-55 kit lens, have other stuff on a basic 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS lens like:

You're a better man than I Laughing Fabulous shots, whatever the lens, but particularly so with inexpensive glass Thumbs Up

My favourite lens is my 70-200 2.8 II It's been consistently outstanding for me. Then again, I have a (relatively) cheapo long lens, 150-500 Sigma, and that has proved itself to be extremely impressive considering it cost a fraction of what something like a 500 f4 does.

Not sure what equipment the OP is using. Maybe 70-200 2.8 on a 5D MKII.

Fair. I have the Bigma, no OS, but more range as I dislike fiddling around changing lens, usually that's when something good happens. Razz

No need to spend loads of money on stuff, but as photographers we like to.

After less than 1 minute of looking:

Used Canon 400D for £120:

Sure the 400D isn't top of the range any more but in the light conditions the OP was shooting in it'd have no trouble focusing and you're even getting L glass coming in with a body at under the £500 budget.

If this guy is a pro then costs will have been factored in when he did a business plan and things like cameras can be written off against tax so there's no need to charge a lot for a single photo just because it was shot on an expensive camera. Also if he is a pro then perhaps he should have asked a mod for permission to post his business on the board instead of playing the "Oh I was out with my camera and happened to snap some cool shots of you... for £20 a pop"

If he wants to chase big ticket commissions then go after the big brands, magazines, products and corporates. Charging high rates at this level won't get him anywhere fast. There's no doubt that the photos are great but for me it's important to differentiate between a business and a hobby and charging someone loads for a photo because the camera it was taken on was expensive is a stupid reason to charge loads.

I bought a pair of tyres for my bike today. They were fitted for free but perhaps they should have charged me extra for using the tyre press and balancer instead of using tyre irons and soap right? Tyre presses are expensive after all.

No one asked him to go out and spend his time taking photos, regardless of how much had been spent on gear. that is a red herring.

Furthermore there is no biking or community contribution unlike Nick Giles so IMHO this thread is spam and should be marked as such.

Buy a bike and get involved in the forum rather than just look to profiteer or get lost.

Does seem pretty expensive for what it is. More expensive equipment tends to out perform the cheaper in more testing condition but as said above decent light and acheap body and cheap Klens you can get cracking shots.

If I was looking to rustle up a bit of business as a pro snapper myself, I think I'd have posted up a batch of pics for free download...but with links to my business on the site. I'm not an expert on marketing but I would think that's the best way to drum up any potential business.

Added to the fact that this snapper hasn't posted here before. Does look like spamming when you join and say 'here are some pics I took...now buy them' Neutral

Re the £500 question, I'd go for a brand new (though refurb) 600D seen recently on ebay at £310 with an s/hand Canon 18-200 at £185 (no box or hood, but perfectly working, flawless optics). The 600 is an excellent camera for the money, same sensor as the 7D (albeit with a much poorer AF system and less than half the fps rate). And the 18-200 is regarded as comparable to L glass especially in good light (though distortion is hilariously awful at the 18-24 end of the scale).

It wasn't really a question, more just making a point that you don't have to spend £3000 to get the same kind of photos the OP is showing. There's so many options with any kind of budget when it comes to DSLR's that I'm sure we could talk about it all day and not get to any definitive answer.

I definitely agree that signing up just to spam photos on the board isn't a great business plan. The OP obviously hasn't researched the board much or they'd of been aware of the usual treatment that spammers get!
