Right I'm back to this search now, but things have changed.

The budget now is just £2,000

Obviously there needs to be some compromise, I guess that will either be weight, or power.

A 200 mile-ish range and at least 50mpg is a must.

It needs to be pillion friendly.

TDM

I had a similar budget and went for a vstrom. I wouldn't take it offroad though.

when you ride a 21 inch you will know. Far more contact with the ground, so great improvement in traction, at the expense of turning radius and cornering on tar.

The multistrada must be the least capable off roader listed above, and the most expensive.

going by your budget, what about an old Africa twin or transalp?

the bmw Dakar?

Transalp maybe, Vara 1000 would be monumentally heavy.

the varadero is a fat chick, as is the new super ten.

the old tenere may do as well.

Im not a fan of the KLR; although a good off roader, it sucks on tar.

the OP did say he only wants light off road, so bikes like the XR and KLR aren't really ideal.

I think with his budget most twins will be out though.

You'll find a Transalp for that.

Nah. If I'm going to go for the weight of the Transalp, I might as well look for a TDM, Caponord both of which are slightly lighter and make a lot more power.

Can find a v-storm for £2,000 more like £2,500

I'd imagine that even on my longest tours, the off-road bits would be about 5% max, and mostly gravel, rutted roads.

I should add that after getting used to a digital dash, I don't fancy going back to an old analogue affair.

Go ahead, buy a KTM 990 R. we all know you want you, screw the budget, throw caution to the winds Mr. Green

Then your road to off road ratio will switch Mr. Green

What do you class a dual sport? It might help expand my selection.

A dual sport should be similarly good off and on road.

Most of the ones discussed are merely taller road bikes.

I was rather impressed by the behaviour of Vracktal's KLE on the May Day run. Not amazingly powerful, but it held its own without breaking a sweat.

I agree with the emphasis.
Like most things in life it's always a compromise. You'll either get a bike that's good off-road and ok on road or vice versa. I doubt you'll get a bike with a 50/50 split. I guess you're looking for the Land Rover* (insert Defender/Range Rover depending on your wallet and comfort level) of the biking world.

That said tyre choice would make a big difference in how a bike handles on/off road.

Thumbs Up

* other makes are available, e.g. Toyota Land Cruiser

My usual suggestions for 'true' dual sports are the G650/690 Enduro/TE610. All singles, but you won't get that low weight twin outside the hand-grenade of a SXV.

Presumably a Tiger 800XC is a good 50/50 split. Way way out of my price range.

My meagre budget needs to buy a bike that's happy in UK towns and citys (think bad potholed roads), can cruise easily on the autobahn. Go off the beaten track a bit in Slovenia. Survive a couple of months in South America, and occasionally carry a 55kg pillion both short and long distances.

Not asking too much am I? Laughing

I would still consider a Tiger more like 78% road 22% off road.

The singles I've mentioned you can do decent off-road on and only be at a slight disadvantage compared to proper full-on dirt bikes.

The tiger is going to be a lumbering beast in comparison.

Less so if you're talking doing 100mph through the dessert, but much more so on a steep muddy British green lane.

Providing you don't want too silly autobahn speeds, the three mentioned will be capable off what you mentioned.

But, then so will a GSXR750 too Wink.

tiger 885i or 955i

I know a guy who ran both of these to just over 100,000miles on each with the absolute bare minimum of servicing, and he wasn't exactly a slow rider either.

they do about 50mpg and will push past 120mph if it takes your fancy.

you can get a nice 885i for £2000 or a rougher 955i to be honest apart from the engine they are the same bike so I would go for the 885i
