Some of you may be aware that I was interested in a GPZ550. Basically, my uncle gave it to me cos it was taking up space and he would rather I had it than sell it for a couple of hundred. It was in, let's call it shabby, condition, it has lived outside for years, it was last started in June 2013 and last used on the road July 2012.
Here is where I will be showing off what is happening.
She was brought round to the house last night at about 5.30, I had a quick spin and noticed that the engine was surging, for now I have put this down to stale fuel and filthy carbs, I then noticed that upon trying to slow down, I couldn't. So brakes needed looking at.
I am making it up as I go along really, no set plan. As a poor student working 3 hours a week on 5.20 an hour, it will be a slow project but I will try my best to have it looking nice for August the 8th, the day I can legally ride it!
I can't wait really, it's quite comfy, frugal(ish) and will cost me £90 a year fully comp!
Here's what she looked like this morning after her bath,
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210068_zpsbe6ed464.jpg
Rusty carbs and a dirty engine,
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210069_zpsa09c7f87.jpg
The ill-fitting panels are winding me up already
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210082_zpsc5559407.jpg
The front brakes wouldn't stop you but also jammed the front wheel so I couldn't move it about,
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210070_zpsb4682e05.jpg
The last tax disc,
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210071_zpse2b1a809.jpg
I don't know if this is 124,746, as in gone round the clock, or genuine, not bad for a thirty year old bike.
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210072_zps695d7f60.jpg
I do like this view, something needs to be done with those mirrors, I'm thinking bar-end mirrors.
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210073_zps5d67631a.jpg
So, after pictures and lusting for the bike, I decided a good place to start was the air filter. Out the filter came for cleaning and low and behold, a spider, living in the filter.
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210074_zpsa2ee1ddd.jpg
Took all the tank and side panels off, I like the tool less design of it, everything pops in, very cool.
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210075_zps069b15f5.jpg
I set to work on the brakes, reasoning that I want to stop before I want to go. Nice and rusty.
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210076_zps17b479a9.jpg
The grimy caliper.
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210077_zps34281b07.jpg
Fairly corroded behind the piston
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210080_zps98e12fd9.jpg
Prised the piston out to reveal heavy corrosion
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210081_zpsaa5eea54.jpg
I cleaned it up a bit with emery cloth and some wire wool
https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/GPZ%20550/P1210085_zps679b4be4.jpg
I'm a very slow worker, as you can see, the last one was taken at night, I spent all day and I have only done the front right caliper.
Now, a question, I need new seals for the caliper, should I get a new piston as well? I assume all brakes will be the same, should I just suck it up and pay the money for a complete brake seal and piston kit?
Any advice or direction on where the project should go, just say.
Wish me luck,

Thanks mate. It's not too bad really, in my head it was a wreck, but when I saw it in person it was just showing its age a bit. I'm at college now until saturday, so should set to work on the other calipers then and may have some fresh pads and seals and stuff to throw in. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

Shell out for new pistons, the other will probably be just as nackered and TBH the single pot calipers on these werent the best even in tip top condition.
Things you can be doing on the cheap to pass the time and tinkering however are many, Clean the carbs and set to factory settings, check/adjust valve clearances, grease all chassis bearings etc.
by the way im mighty jelous that not only have you been GIVEN a rather good bike, but its actually in bloody good condition, such good condition that to be honest I could easily believe the millage, I highly doubt its been around the clock.
Cheers

I'd also believe that mileage, most of the crud on that looks it's due to being left out in all weathers, rather than having gone to the moon and back.
Good bike and starting to get quite rare now, treat it well.
BTW, if you don't want those mirrors, I'll buy them for my Z1100, I'm after a pair of all black rectangulars. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

If you don't want those mirrors, I'll have them. Those are great mirrors on account of them being really wide-angle so you can see everything behind you. They are also narrower than the handlebars so they don't break if you drop the bike and don't impede filtering or getting it in and out narrow spaces.
Speedo glass is too clear for it to have been round the clock. It would be yellowed and crazed from the sunlight if it had. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Having thought about it, it's been in the family for years. My dads cousin had it for years, then my dads uncle the last few years, and now me.
I don't know what to do with the brake pistons though, my head says to replace them but the scrimper inside me says to spend a couple of hours with some emery cloth and just get the new seals.
For the valves, I assume it's shim under bucket? I'm going to have to invest in a manual as well.
I may attack the carbs tomorrow after college, so long as the weather is reasonable, the bike still lives outside, albeit under a cover now.
RE: the mirrors, they are quite corroded at the threaded end. But if you want, make an offer, they can go towards a fresh set or some brake fluid!
EDIT: I couldn't get the mirrors to a good angle, still mostly shoulders ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

that's actually a good bike for free man!
i'd say new pistons on the bike though, they were my one real pain in the ass on the GPX and those ones are pretty bad.
if you wanna try save money, check ebay and look for a second hand caliper with good pistons, but i think you'd probably ride easier knowing they are in good nick.
Bar ends would suit that bike i reckon too.
i like the colour on the bike too! give the swingarm a good check for rust, and check that there's no water in the fuel tank if it's been living outdoors.
looking forward to this one! ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

I brought the piston into college today, it appears you lot are right.
I'm going to have to replace the piston, my college teacher reckons no amount of cleaning will fix it, I'll replace the seals and he reckons the pitting will just damage the new seals again, d'oh!
So I'm going to have a look for new pads, new seals and pistons for it, shouldn't be too tricky.
The exhaust looks original but they aren't, I think. They have MIVV stamped on the silencers, which I know is an exhaust company.
I never did anything to it tonight, I wanted to clean the carbs but as I don't have space in the garage, she still lives outside and I don't want to leave the carbs off over night or anything, and no light to take them off with, perhaps tomorrow something will be done. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

not sure if it will fit but they look similar. there's a post on this page https://www.facebook.com/groups/Biker.booty/ with someone selling GT750 calipers for £15, might be worth seeing if they would fit and if they are in good nick? at the very least i reckon the pistons would fit. ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

Right, got a bit of fuel in her, from the lawn mower, charged up the battery, and fired up the Quattro!
She is very rumbly, although not at high revs and if you pull in the clutch and hold it for 30 seconds or so, but she runs beautifully sounds wonderful after the noise disappears.
I think clean carbs, decent fuel and maybe fresh plugs, she'll be right as rain. Just wish I knew what the noise is... Also the clutch drags when in gear, is that just worn clutch plates? Or warped? Maybe damaged clutch pressure springs? I don't know, I'm going to tear into the clutch anyway to see why it's doing that.
Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVOaIUNk4dY
It's a bit disjointed because I took several videos and just spliced a few together. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

It doesn't really want to idle, I think it's the carbs need cleaning, if I leave the throttle alone, it dies. Even when it was nice and warm.
Engine oil is probably ancient. It will be getting an oil and filter change soon.
I was lead to believe it was the clutch basket making the noise, do you think that could be causing the dragging clutch as well? ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

I know that lots of pipes need replacing. Loads of them have split.
I'll have a proper look if this weather ever cheers up. Got no room in the garage, I've filled it with other bikes, so I have to work on her outside.
Am I right in saying that the primary chain is not the cam chain, but a different one, my thoughts are that it is a chain that the engine drives the clutch with?
What would happen if it was severely worn out?
I'll have a go at the carbs when I get a sunny afternoon, I don't want to leave the intakes open for ages. I also need to do some work on my TTR to get it's MOT in.
AARGH!
