I've a monitor capable of 1080p (says so on a sticker) but it's only letting me select upto 1680 x 1050,

also have a tv plugged into the pc via hdmi which is at 1080p no problem

if I try and force the monitor to 1080 it just says invalid range.

now the odd thing is when I plugged in my htpc via vga, that allowed 1080p

my card is more than capable so not sure what's going on, card is Radeon HD7870

turns out i'm being a mong, checked it's spec and it's recommended is 1680 x 1050 despite it saying 1080p on it's label.

odd how the htpc allows 1920 x 1080 to be selected and work though

it's making dual screening with the tv awkward Sad

try setting both to their best res rather than the same
I used to do that when I had an older Mac screen that wasn't HDMI

At work I recently tried to use a monitor at 1080p which it was capable of, as is my graphics card. However the graphics driver wouldn't even offer 1080p as a resolution option. I installed an updated driver for the video card and tried again and all was hunky dory.

htpc was vga,

i connect my desktop via DVI, tried also via hdmi to dvi converter and vga but same on all from the desktop pc

monitor only has vga and dvi outputs

gonna have a muck about at the weekend and double check I wasn't imagining the htpc working on 1080

Our TV has some funny setting for the inputs, where it sets PC inputs to a really funny resolution as default.

There's a menu on the TV that gives you a choice of 3-or-so resolutions for the inputs, so maybe try and look there.
