Given the origins of St. George (also iirc patron saint of Venice) I wonder if the likes of Nigel Farage would want him banned as the English patron saint due to immigration rules.

Funny old thing isn't it? St Paddy`s day and there`s a song and dance about it.
St George`s day in ENGLAND and not even a mention on the news or the radio Sad
Just goes to show how much people care about this country Sad

Anyway , whatever happened to St Edmund?

Cause we don't have an inferiority complex?

We know we're awesome. We don't need to scream and shout about it.

You may well have been joking but it's not really a laughing matter.
Whilst Jock's, Mick's and Druid's are free to celebrate their 'National' day, English citizens who do likewise are branded racialists.
Leftiewankers have been very successful in their quest to demonise anyone who displays any English patriotism.

Why is it not a laughing matter ? Whereas I agree that the Irish and Scots (and Welsh) freely celebrate their national day, I find the whole notion of this type of nationalism ridiculous and a little bit sad.

Of course, I wouldn't want to stop any Englishman doing the same thing, and I really don't think it is in anyway racist (even taking into account my dangerous lefty leanings), its just not something I consider to be particularly reverential.

Ignoring Daily Fail rambling - If there ever was/is a problem, its more that your average British person doesn't give a damn about St Georges day - and why should they. Christmas, easter, ''birthdays'' - are only of interest to many people because they've been commercialised. The TV news broadcasts a daily panic to remind everyone about the christmas-present-buying countdown every year Rolling Eyes Just in case people didn't feel obliged to spend tons of money already.

The only reason St Patricks day is 'celebrated' by the majority [who are often not Irish] is its a good excuse to dress up, wear silly hats and head down the pub to get pissed. Not many people celebrate 'St Patricks Day' - People go out in force to celebrate 'Get exceptionally pissed day' - The alcohol and affiliated industries love it and promote it.

Once its world cup time all the 'St george' supporters will of course come out in force painting their faces and so on to express their nationalism Rolling Eyes And the beer will start flowing once again, along with the pub payments for broadcast fees.

St Patricks Day used to be a dry holiday as until recently the pubs were closed in Ireland that day.
Blame/Congratulate the Yanks for the piss up.

oh, Fish and Chips are not English, we nicked the chips from the French pomme frites.
the 18th Century fish shops sold battered fish in bread rolls. Thumbs Up

I suspect the main reason St George's Day hasn't taken on is because no big company has picked it up and ran with it in a marketing campaign.

Ireland has Guinness (not to mention a rapacious line in tourist marketing fiddle-di-dee) and Scotland has its cultural way points backed up by big business (although St Andrew's day seems to be a bigger thing among home-sick expats and posh tory-voting Scots desperate to appear proud about their country of origin in between doing it down.)

Also, England got lost in Britain. GB isn't a country, its a union of countries, Westminster in trying desperately to hold it all together over the years (not just recently) traded in English identity for the idea of a 'British' nation (if you see what I mean.)

The upshot is, England's cultural markers have been disappearing - WM continues to promote Team GB by sidelining England as a country in and off itself.
