I've never done the MayDay run before.
Every time I've wanted to do it, I've always had a bike issue.
By the sounds of things, the Chaly will be ideal for doing it on, as the A21 is apparently a slow crawl the whole way to Hastings.

Chaly is air/oil cooled, so wont have any overheating issues.
It's got a top speed of 35/40mph, so will be well within it's comfort zone.
It's got a comfy seat.
And it's now only 50cc, so super efficient (80+mpg).

Remote stop

Alarm and immobiliser. It has a remote start option but obviously with the lack of electric starter, it's useless.
However, it does have a keyless function, meaning you can turn the ignition and electrics on, and ride it with the keys in your pocket. Smile

So who else will be doing the run. Anyone heading down from Sittingbourne area?
Anyone fancy joining me? Laughing

Quite a few reasons.

Originality being one of them. And the fact that when I had the Z155ho engine fitted, it was damn right dangerous. Laughing

Elevated Mikuni VM26 meant the small internal fuel tank wasn't big enough to feed it. I'd get around 20 miles to a tank because the fuel pressure dropped too easily.

It kept twisting rear swing arms. And I don't fancy an alloy extended jobby. I like the stocker look.

And just reliability really. Hopefully the 50cc (Well, it's actually 72cc), will go and go.

Hastings run is brilliant! Hastings and Southend are probally the only 2 of the big South East runs im doing this year. Thumbs Up

A21 does suffer pretty badly though, thats the road with all the double white lines up right? Yeah thats a pretty slow road into town Mr. Green

Is that a 72 head and barrel or just the larger barrel?

Today I rode the Chaly from work, over to my garage in Gillingham. It's around 10 miles, but along the A2 through Newington and Rainham, it's quite a long, up paced road (40mph+).
Poor Chaly was pinned most of the way there, engine really was laboring in third, and fourth was just causing the revs to slowly drop.

Current sprocket set up was 12t front, 35t rear.
Previous set up was 15:31, which was literally un-ridable.

I dug an old Renthal 37t Honda CRF50 sprocket out of my shed, very carefully centralized it on the Chaly sprocket, (by eye of course), and marked the bolt holes for the Chaly stud pattern.
Then I drilled 4 new holes in the CRF50 sprocket, to fit the Chaly. Razz

Reason behind this, is because with the bolt on Chaly rear wheels (A modified unit from OORacing), the biggest 428 sprocket you can get is 35t. And unfortunately that's not big enough for the little engine.

Anyway, long story short. Gearing is now 12:37, and rides a hell of a lot nicer.
Gets to a stead 55kph, and will eventually reach between 75 and 80kph on the flat.
Down hill makes no odds to top speed, as it'll more or less reach the 'limiter' on the flat.

It's just super boggy from take off still, carb needs setting up a little I think.

Gave it a clean and polish today.
Still cant for the life of me get this carb running right.
Spoke to OORacing today, going to have to whip the head off and get an exact CC measurement of this thing.
Unless there is an easier way? Can I syringe petrol into the spark plug hole until it's full, to get an idea of it's cubic capacity? Laughing

I take it that you can't find out what the bore and stroke measurements are without physically opening it up to measure it?

Just cant get a reliable answer.

I've bought another carb anyway. Got a 16mm made for the Thumpstar Road-Ripper, so jetted ready to go for a 50cc engine. Lets see how it goes.

Fitted new carb. Runs fantastically well now! Smile

Also fitted genuine Honda Leg Shield, and removed the exhaust system as I've ordered another one, which should fit a little nicer.

Pics to come once it's all done

LED headlight is bright as buggery!

Engine still isn't quite right though. So I'm now starting to think it's an engine problem, rather than carb. Got a feeling the valves aren't seating right as it's got feck all compression.
Timing is dot on, as valve clearances are fine, so after a very lumpy ride to Hastings and back on Monday, engine is coming out, and head is coming off, to have a little look as to why it doesn't even have enough power to pull back my foreskin.

I decided to run the Chaly back over to the garage tonight, and have one last look at it before Monday, as it's still not quite right.

After a quick plug chop, it seemed to be running a little lean now, so I raised the needle, which in turn, really smoothed out the mid-range.

Still stalling randomly, and cack off the throttle. So decided to whip the rocker covers off, and check the valves.

Bloody inlet valve had tightened right up, and had no clearance what so ever. ffs.
So backed it off to 6thou, and tried again...

It's good now, but the very low rpm (first 1/4 of the throttle range) can bog at times, I've a feeling it's too lean low down, as it gets better as I wind the air screw in, but then I go too far, and it's worse again. Cant quite seem to get it perfect though.

Anyway, seems to be as good as it'll get. So weather dependent, Chaly could be doing a half decent run on Monday. Twisted Evil

Shes good! Razz

Runs a dream with the next exhaust fitted, and inlet valve backed off.
Little ticky now as I touch the throttle, and it picks up off idle, but instantly goes silent once the revs go about about 1500 rpm.

But rides lush, really nice power delivery (if you can call it that), right from idle, to full speed in all 4 gears. Hill starts twos up easily with the new gearing.
All ready for Monday.

Ground clearance is still an issue, but I will wind the shocks up tomorrow.

I was getting so many looks today in Sittingbourne. I even saw another Chaly. Completely standard red one (Really tatty), a proper old work-horse.

Paint work is so tatty on it. I wish I had it powdercoated while it was all apart, but I don't want to waste time and money doing up this frame, I will re-frame it for a frame that has not been butchered. This one has had all the exhaust mounts chopped away at some point in it's life, and is very pitted.
There is a nice frame for sale local to me, un-stamped, so I will probably buy that one, and use it to re-frame this.

Turned out to be a great day. Smile

Drove the Transit to Rye harbor, parked up in the pay-and-display, and unloaded the Chaly.

Rode the Chaly two-up, along the A259, COMPLETELY forgetting about Ferry Hill! Laughing

I apologize to any other bikers, cars, buses, and cyclists who had to over-take our 1st gear crawl up the hill.
I'm sure we were passed by a brisk dog walker too.

Once on the main run, we cruised at a steady 30mph the whole way. Reaching highs of 40mph down hill, and a steady 20/25mph on the inclines.

Hit Hastings. Had loads of people smiling and taking photos. Was a good crack.

https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/10303867_10152375071780606_6110921887375418763_n.jpg

Headed back to Rye at around 3pm, was a much easier ride back as it was mostly down-hill once we were out of Hastings.

Parked up in the harbor, and met my first hater of the day. A group of over-weight balding men, on their shitty rat bikes, with their matching leather 'clan' jackets on felt the need to tell me my Chaly looked like it belonged in a Circus.

It's a shame they didn't quite notice their own bikes looked a bit like some of the shite all the Pikeys bring over my weighbridge every Monday morning.

Ah well, rant over.
Loved the day, Chaly did me proud. Only down side is I brimmed the petrol tank last night, and it'd managed to leak past the cap while in the back of the Transit, and it's wrecked the paint work.

So next week, she's being stripped, and shipped off to the Powder coaters for a proper job doing. Smile
