Was it really October I last did anything with the-Pup? Well, Fitted Jimbo's GS500 Headlamp, but it wasn't a good fit; and we couldn't adjust it low enough... but then the insurance ran out; but I had JUST got a new Flat, so it stayed with Tef, as I got stuck into decorating my new home and 'Stuff', and then we had 'Christmas'... BUT, bored now, got nothing left to paint or wrap or unwrap! And we had a SUNNY DAY last week...
So I decided to 'clean' the bike.... Tef asked why I needed a socket set to polish stuff. MEN! They just dont understand!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2381.jpg
I HAD to take it all to bits to get into all the awkward nooks and crannies, DIDN'T I!
Rather annoyed actually, that a winter's weather has managed to rust the loverly chrome handle-bars rather badly. So they have been taken off and polished, and given a coat of clear laquer to try and keep them shiney.
Anyway, while it was apart Tef said we could 'have a look' at this head-lamp.... BUT, well, you SEE, he has been 'shopping' and got a whole load of bits for his Colonal-Custard.....
And these rather fancy HID Headlamp bulbs were just 'sitting' there on the table, cluttering the place up, so I thought that I'd help him tidy the place a bit and put one in the-Pup! WELL... he only needs ONE in the DT, doesn't he? So:- ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. Round 7" Headlamp Conversion with HID Bulbs - Part 1
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2337.jpg
This had been considered during the main 'build' of the project; to get as much light out of the thing as I can, and keep the electrical wattage 'sensible' with all the other gadgets I wanted; But Tef, gibbering about spending so much money on everything else, reckoned they were too expensive... but he got this pair for £40, so split between the two bikes isn't so bad.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2349.jpg
First thing to do was check it fitted in the headlamp. Guess what. It didn't! The standard H4 headlamp with the connector on the back is 'almost' the same length, but the HID is just a couple of mm longer, and has the high-voltage wire coming out straight.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2353.jpg
Tef's solution to this problem on his little DT headlamp, was to cut a walloping great hole in the back of the shell! So that's what I did! Marking it out by making punch-marks around a circle drawn round a head-lamp gromet, then drilling lots of little holes round the egde.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2356.jpg
Then I drilled them out a bit bigger to leave a thin perforated circle, like a tax-disc, I could knock out with a hammer! I liked that bit!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2358.jpg
Trial fitted over the headlamp lense, it was a little 'tight' around the bottom of the bulb, where the wire comes out, and it needs a little extra space there as the lense has to be 'hinged' into the bowl. So, cleaning up the ragged edges, with file and dremmel, and making nice round-ish hole.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2367.jpg
All cleaned up, and trial fitted again, bulb sits in the hole nicely.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2368.jpg
Tef showed me a trick to make an edge protector/grommet, using some PVC tubing. Slice the pipe along it's length, careful to cut in a straight line and not have the pipe 'twist' as you cut...
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2369.jpg
Then open up the cut and slot it around the metal edge you want to protect.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2370.jpg
One protected metal edge, that wires wont 'fret' on.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2372.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2373.jpg
So, now to make the head-lamp fit the bike.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2350.jpg
The 7" Diameter lense Suzuki Head-Lamp is just a LITTLE bit toio big to go into the Super-Dream lamp bracket. We managed to squeeze it in there, by springing the blades out a bit, but, this was why we couldn't get the aim right. Sitting so tight to all the wiring and the speedo & tacho cable's, there was no space for it to 'tilt'.
Measuring up, Tef reckoned that we needed the lamp about an inch further forwards, and the brackets about half an inch futher apart.
I looked at e-bay and investigated after-market head-lamp brackets, but, the Super-Dream has a sort of wire basket between the two fork yokes, and it supports clocks and has cable guides and 'stuff' in it.
Tef had bought some aluminium plate to make the clock bracket for Colonal-Custard.....
Tef spent AGES working out how much they would need to be 'cranked' to sit inside the bracket and outside the head-lamp, until we realised that the headlamp was just about the same width as the outside of the bracket and we could make two flat plates and simply bolt them on the OUTSIDE!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2375.jpg
A piece of plate was marked up, using a head-lamp bracket bush as a template, with the hole centres 35mm apart.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2382.jpg
Drilled, and filed to shape.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2383.jpg
The original bracket holes were drilled out to take an M10 bolt, and then the new extensions bolted on place so the head-lamp shell could be fitted. MUCH better, its not rubbing on teh speedo & Tacho cables now, and can TILT! So hopefully be able to point it at the ROAD!
NEXT: The horn bracket has to be removed and a new one made up to take both the horn and the HID Balast box. ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. Full Licence 13/09/2012, 1994 Moto Guzzi 750 Strada

Round 7" Headlamp Conversion with HID Bulbs - Part 2
Right, so we have sorted getting the big round head-lamp to fit on the bike, and we have got the long HID Bulb to fit in the big round headlamp... and we were looking at making a new horn bracket to mount the HID Ballast Resistor to.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2388.jpg
Top, is the old horn bracket. I spent ages sanding and painting this, along with lots of other little bits and bobs like it... and NOW its being taken off! It was hidden behind a plastic grille that covered the horn, and when I first put the round headlamp on, the grill wouldn't fit under it, so I had to leave it off. And I thought that that horn and bent bracket was 'ugly', until Tef came in waving a tape measure and cut that even UGLIER bit of aluminium! This would HAVE to be made 'Pretty'!
Anyway, in the middle is the Ballast resistor. Electric box of tricks that makes HID Headlamps work, and says 'Danger - High Voltage' on it!
Tef spent ages outside with a tape measure wiggling it and that bit of plate around, until he came back in, marked the holes and started drilling!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2390.jpg
Meanwhile he got ME soldering connections on the ends of a bit of wire he had cut, which he told me was 'essential' to earth the ballast box.
Then he bolted it all together, to try it for size.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2391.jpg
Back
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2392.jpg
Front
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2394.jpg
Fitted.
After all Tef's faffing around with the tape measure, it all seemed to go together allright.... but GAWD it's UGLY!
He-he.. time to remidy THAT!
Tef had one little modification to make, putting a notch in the top so a second bolt could be fitted to stop the horn rotating about it's bolt... then I painted it black, and added a little 'Sparkle'
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2396.jpg
Some Rhinestone 'Diamante' stick-on letters, off e-bay! Hey, a girl GOTTA have 'Bling'! But this was NOT enough, Oh-No!
Do you remember, Tef had bought a load of 'bits' for his Colonel Custard? Well Iyz been ROBBIN again!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2397.jpg
Tef had got a LOAD of LED's. Red ones, Green ones, Amber Ones, White Ones, ALL manner of colours, 50 of each! But in amongst them all, he'd got just FIVE fancy 'Rainbow' colour changing ones... so of course, with so MANY to choose from.... Thats what I nicked!
Cant have Bling unless it gets flashed about, can you, and what better way to flash it about but stick a spot lamp on it! So that's what we did!
To make a housing for the LED's (actually one Rainbow, and one Purple) & spread the light about more evenly and in the right direction; in good Blue-Peter 'Make and Do' fasion, Tef sat down with some scissors (an irresponsible adult was on hand to supervise!); sticky tape, glue, and whatever old rubbish was lying around to go in the recycling tub for the bin-men!
What he came up with was a bit of clear plastic cut from a curtain pole box, folded to make a small toblerone tube shape 'thing' covered in tin-foil.... with a little square left clear. (Tin foil, shiney side up on the inside)
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2398.jpg
Plastic covered in tin foil & folded
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2399.jpg
Joined & glued.
The LED's were then threaded in, and the ends plugged with Silicone sealant, with a bit more tin-foil over the back to stop light coming out the ends, then a bit more silicone!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2400.jpg
Then the 'window' masked off, painted black.
MORE soldering to make up a wire to connect it to the side light, and....
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2409.jpg
With the lights on...
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Lights%20and%20wiring/imag2408.jpg
With the Light's off.... PWITTEEEeeeee!
SO! That's the horn bracket 'made'.... Just laqured over to stop the Rhinestones coming off. Now just need to fit it up, and sort out all the wiring, so we can try it out! ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. There's been a bunch of changes mentioned; I think they said something about retro-fitted HID's being banned...
Ultimately, it's 'just' a bulb.... if MOT man even bothers to check what kind of bulb is in there, or asks.... He COULD fail it... but he knows as well as I do, bike gets ridden home, the HID pulled from the shell, H4 fitted... Wiring is all still there for it..... ballast & header for the PIR would still be on the bike, and twenty minutes later he'd have the bike back for 'Re-Test'.... twenty minutes after THAT, H4 would be 'pulled' and the HID slotted back into place..... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

four Years. FOUR YEARS.
I dont know whether it feels like an eternity or just yesterday I started this post!
We watch them though, dont we, and so many get started then dissapear down the board; most without an ending, and you woinder what happens to them. Then there's the ones that do get finished, and, well, you still wonder what has happned to them. After all the work and all the hopes and dreams, and that thrilling first ride... do they ever last past that first summer?
My last post on the thread, was in January 2012, nine months after I got the Pup on the road, his first MOT cert in my hand, and a big smile on my face; and told you all about my sparkly LED's and HID headlamp.
Went very quiet after that, and the reason was he was STOLEN! But I got him back. but my enthusiasm was rather dented.
But, before he was nicked, I had started to write a post telling you all about fitting a customised top box; so, bringing you up to date, I shall start there, around April 2012. ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. Fitting the Top-Box or A girl GOTTA 'accessorise'! (Part 1)
For all that 'the-Pup' has had pretty much a show-standard, custom build, it was ALWAYS going to have to work for a living after. To which end I wanted a top-box, to put my hat in, and cart stuff around. This required much deliberation. E-Bay turned up a lot of ideas, but going over to 'Busters' and looking at some boxes in the plastic, even more!
The cheap ones were, for the most part pretty small, and very flimsy, and I was warned about the cheap ones with plastic mounting plates that frequently broke. But I eventually turned up some reasonably priced ones with a metal mounting plate, that looked quite useful, only I wasn't sure how big to get.
I had originally thought small, and looked at 25l ish, but the one I had looked at in Busters was TINY. So I was looking at 35 & 45l boxes. Tef said that a 45l box would be HUGE.. "That's as big as the paniers I had on my VF" He said.... "Look!" and brought one down and put it on the rack.... "Actually......." he capitulated..... "You could get away with that! Its no wider than the indicators, and it actually looks slimmer, than the little one at Busters!" So I bought one. FD-Moto, off e-bay, under £40... bargain!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2622.jpg
Tough Polyeurathane, with a metal base plate. It's tougher than the cheapo's I was looking at in Busters, though not quite as thick and durable as the Nonfango's tef has. But then less than half the money! Only thing that's not 'so' nice is the latch which feels a bit 'flimsy'
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2893.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2894.jpg
Easy to fit though. Four bolts and two plates clamp the base plate to the rack.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2175.jpg
And doesn't look SO big on the bike, yet will take two full face helmets, with a bit of a jiggle, but my full face and wet-weathers with ease!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2177.jpg
But.... posher versions have lights in that red reflective strip....... and Tef had all these LED's he had bought to do the DT.......
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2500.jpg
Watching what Tef did to make back-lights for the DT's dials, I started soldering resistors on the -ve leg of some LED's.... well LOTS of LED's actually!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2501.jpg
I has sort of started by plonking LED's on the plastic strip to see how far apart they would be and how many I would need.... 24 in total, so after adding resistors to them I sort of taped them in place then pondered how to wire them all up and 'stuff'!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2507.jpg
Tef suggested poking them through the backing paper that goes behind the strip, but this was just a white bit of paper, so first I covered it in Tin-Foil tgo make it shinier..... "Better make sure all the leads are properly insulated then!" said Tef! Darn! Tin-Foil conducts electricity, doesn't it! Spent AGES taping each little LED leg, and covering the tin-foil in celotape!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2508.jpg
Then I had to connect them all together! I kept cutting little lengths off the really thin wire rather than stripping the ends! took AGES to do this!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2509.jpg
The -ve side of each LED with the resistor on, could all be joined together on a common 'earth', but to every third LED was going to be powered from the tail-light, while the two between them were going to be powered by the stop-lamp... in the hope that the stop lamp would be three times as bright as the tail light.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/top-box/imag2620.jpg
Damnebly fiddly! AND once done, they all had to be soldered! BUT.... ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. Full Licence 13/09/2012, 1994 Moto Guzzi 750 Strada

So, on the bike. We used a water-proof connector to attach the wires to the bike, so that the top-box can be removed.

In the dark, all lights 'off' the camera flash mimicking a car headlamp to show how much is reflectie!

Again, in the dark, with the camera flash, but tail light only, no box light

Now with the top box tail light

And with brake and tail lights.

the Theft
We'd had a busy Easter with Tef's kids. His Bike was 'done' and waiting for pay-day to get an MOT on it, BUT..... it wasn't THERE any-more! Saturday night, about 1am he went down to make a coffee, and looking out the window saw something bright and flapping that wasn't quite 'right'..... it was the pink flash on my bike cover.... HIS bike under a blue cover was GONE!
Sunday, was spent cruising around all the local scroat spots trying to find it, to no avail, and dealing with the police. Monday, instead of sorting the MOT, he was sorting the insurance company. THEN we went to ASDA to get groceries.....
Got back, let the dog out.... and he DIDN'T run into MY bike! THAT was 'gone' too! B'STARDS had forced the back-door and nicked the keys to get it!
Oh Fer FLUCKSAKE!
ALL the keys...... Tef had six more Super-Dreams, PLUS his 750 and 1000! This shit just turns your stumouch. They'd been IN THE HOUSE! They had the KEYS to ALL tef's bikes! It was like being cought in an earthquake.... it seriousely shakes your foundations.
But life goes on.
More dealing with police. More dealing with insurance companies. More trawling round the scroat sites; though we were both loath to leave the house incase they came back.....
Tuesday, Tef was trying to work out what to do about the locks on the other bikes, when the police called. They had found 'The Pup'.
Some frantic phone calls were made, and Tef managed to borrow some money from his mum, so we could go get it back from the compound, DREADING what state it would be in, after we paid the exhorbitant police Ransom to get it back!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Recovered/imag2647.jpg
It could have been worse.......
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Recovered/imag2644.jpg
It could have been a LOT worse!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Recovered/imag2648.jpg
My spandangly top-box was 'gone'...
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Recovered/imag2645.jpg
But it was mostly just muddy.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Recovered/imag2646.jpg
My HID Head-Lamp was still there.... they hadn't done the usual thing of ripping the lamp out to get to the ignition wiring....... no.... course they didn't.... they'd got the KEYS!
We didn't! So I couldn't start it up or anything to see if it still ran! OR lock it back up so they couldn't have it away again!
Tef left me moping, and went on a tour of the local motor-cycle shops and hardware stores, spending the last of the cash his mum had loaned him on pad-locks and a new disc-lock, while I ordered YET another lock-set off e-bay!
I was cooking dinner, when Tef went outside to put the new pad-locks on the old chains. It was rather disconcerting when he came back in ten minutes later, and I asked what was up, and he said, 'Nothing - Done'
Eight bikes; Eight heavy-duty padlocks, one disc lock. DOES NOT increase your confidence when he chopped them all off in barely a minute a lock!
There were NOT 'Cheap' locks either!
Only solace I had was that few scroats walk round with 14" Angle Grinders in thier pockets!
BUT, new pad-locks and a new disc-lock, I was a LITTLE more comfortable.....
But BUGGER ME!
After a frought filled day, we had an early night....... let the dog out for a wee..... WHAT THE FUCK!
All the covers had been pulled off the bikes! Not fully, and from different sides! JUST enough to get at the bludy chains!
They'd come BACK!
While we were IN!
And had ANOTHER fucking go!
It was like another, BIGGER earth tremour.
Both Tef and I were almost set to chuck in the towel.
How could he keep doing project bikes up, only to have them keep getting nicked. HOW much security would we need JUST to hang onto the bikes we had!
Would they be BACK tomorrow?
I mean, they had the keys and must of thought they were laughing, till they found that Tef had, LUCKILY swapped all the locks!
But.... would they be back with tools? Would they have another go at breaking in the house for the keys again?! What would we have to do? MOVE!
Tef shrugged, and found heart doing what NEEDED to be done. One of his project bikes was still stripped down, and conveniently its keys had been in its petrol cap lock, which doesn't release the key unless the cap is in the tank...
So he set about drilling out the tank-lock and removing all the others, to swap them. Again, something of a confidence shaker to watch him burst the seat-lock so he could lift the seat and get at the seat-lock screws in a mater of moments..... Blokes too honest...... he'd be an 'ace' at this bike nicking lark!
Anyway, new ignition lock fitted, could start the engine and see how it ran. It did. Seems that they nicked it, got as far as the park two blocks away, but got cornered and dumped it at the bottom of a foot-bridge. Petrol tank was still nearly full.
But I wasn't comfortable. I had my doubts that the bike was still 'good'.... and I felt it had been voilated, so REALLY didn't want to ride it.
But, was May, just shy of a month before the aniversary of its post resoration MOT... so Tef got me to clean it up, then took it down to our happy MOT chappy..... and told him the story, and asked him to give it a THOROUGH going over......
He did, and was still as thrilled with it after a year as he had been when it was new built, and was impressed by the new HID headlamp too! Gave me SOME heart, but I was still not happy, and I was reluctant to get on and ride..... ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. Summer 2012
Wasn't. Well, it wasn't a summer! It rained all the time.
Rain and tests. Tef kept booking me in for another Mod 2 every time I failed for a stupid mistake; BUT, 13 September I finally passed!
Next morning I looked at the Pup, and I KNEW there was something wrong... so started taking him apart to work out what it was! I couldn't figure it out.
https://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420523_493346107356978_1310540974_n.jpg
Eventually worked it out... Tef had taken the L-Plates off!
Actually... he's swapped engines! This is about the only 'work' the Pup's had since I finished the resto.
I had wanted to do an engine rebuild; but with costs mounting and the project dragging out, Tef had convinced me to just service the engine and use as was. But after a few hundred miles, it had been belching smoke and sounding a bit sick, so we'd swapped it for an engine Tef had just top-end rebuilt for another project; and when I got my licence.. he wanted it back! So swapped it for another one from his pile of ready spares, that had 6v electrics and a kick-starter, we think came from a full-power, pre 1981 bike.

My first L-Less ride!

And we went to the Vic-Biker's pub at Coalville with Smiler, to celebrate.
Because that REALLY is the end of the 'Project', which was to build a bike to learn my mechanics and get my licence.
But, the Pup soldiers on. ____________________ Real bikers build their own Renovated and Riding a 1986 Honda CB125TD-C called the Pup. Full Licence 13/09/2012, 1994 Moto Guzzi 750 Strada
