Why do you think the likes of Rossi, Mcguiness, Dunlop to name a few wear top line kit? To protect them thats why. I stand to my word if you wear a £10 helmet you have a £10 head.

Oh come off it, money isn't everything. Here's John McGuinness lapping the TT in a goddamn pudding bowl and goggles of all things. An AlpineStars or Dainese logo on that lid isn't going to make a difference besides jacking up the price to high heaven.
https://images.bennetts.co.uk/Global/Bike%20Social/Isle%20of%20Man/JM_Ago_startline_450.jpg
If we were to judge everything by it's price, a numpty on a brand-new YZFR125 could claim to own loads more bike than someone with a second-hand 600 that cost a quarter of the price.
I think you were a bit hasty to pass judgement on the 10 quid helmet. It is actually possible to get good stuff (and I mean proper stuff that is good where it counts a.k.a. SHARP ratings, not stuff that has a fancy logo and the support of a big marketing budget and celebrity endorsement) if your attitude was that of making the most of your money.
You need to see beyond the illusion! Sellers can mark anything up, but it's the idiots, who fall for it and pay top dollar and then either through ignorance or self-consolation believe that they actually didn't get the short end of the stick simply because they paid so much, are the ones that keep the whole circus going. |
McGuinness is taking a massive risk here, to stay with the "classic" look. That's his call. If he came off, almost definitely his head would be mashed up!
Paddy is right though, if his £10 helmet scores highly in safety ratings then it's safe. The price shouldn't matter.
I'll sell anyone my lid for £5000 if it'll make em feel safer!
EDIT: Like the little Ninja BTW. Probably a bit small for my gangly frame but still looks good.
If the OP doesn't need to sprint off the line its fine.
Someone has almost always got a faster bike than you, or will take more risks etc so who needs a race bike to go to work on? Or wind round the country roads at the weekend.
Enjoy it mate! ____________________ Honda CB600F Hornet 2013 -> Kawasaki Z1000SX ABS Tourer 2015 |

I had a BOX helmet, pretty good lid. Then I got a SHARK one, about double the price, better construction and crucially it doesn't steam up. At all. The BOX one did on a regular basis. So to me there is merit in spending more on a lid. SHARK one looks sharper too, FWIW. |
Same, shark one is still in use atm, last one the strap broke after a couple of months.
Also internal sunvisor, better antifogging and venting, win win

I went from a £30 Box BX-2 that misted all the time to a £120 Shark S900, no misting (best lid for anti-fog IMO), quieter plus internal sun visor.
Conversely though I got a £330 HJC R-PHA 10 and that misted up like a bitch, was loud as hell and the visor mechanism requires two hands near enough to open, hated it and I would rate the Box lid for being a better lid (even on the Sharp ratings the Box is 4 star whilst the HJC is 3!).
Went back to Shark after that with a new S900 so I would rate them from best to worst as Shark -> Box -> HJC, price tag isn't everything.
*I do accept the HJC is meant for use on track hence being a bit lacking for road use but even on the track I couldn't stand it, prefer comfort and ease of use the Shark offers* ____________________ Current: 02 FZS 1000 Some Bike Pics...

Realistically you don't need any gear or even a helmet at all if you don't crash.
I'm still working on that bit ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |
