I normally do 6 mile round trips and not even that often.
Well tomorrow I'm riding 21 miles. Max elevation is 600ft I think. On a mountain bike with city jet tyres on it.
Any tips for before and during? I suck at inclines, and not hugely fit but I'm hoping I'll manage.
Thanks

Get a decent night sleep beforehand.

Muesli, Banana and plenty of water before you go.

Have a pee even if you don't need to, squeeze it out!

Stretch your hams and quads before you set off.

TAKE IT EASY. If you don't know how to stand and pedal super slowly up harsher hills, now is a good time to learn. Stand up, try to aim for 5mph or less and focus on controlling your breathing and keeping it steady, don't let your heart rate rocket as you'll just run out of steam.

Most of all, enjoy it!

Eat bananas. Drink a hell of a lot.

Keep your pedals spinning. Its better to go in a higher gear with a higher cadence (RPM) than to be crunching out a big gear and knackering your legs.

so my trip was cut short, only got 4 miles from home when the front wheel felt weird. I got off the bike and noticed that part of the tire has come off the rim, shortly after the inner tube exploded sounding like a shotgun. I am now walking home because i don't have a pump or innertube with me. Epic fail but why did the tyre come partly off the rim? Hasn't done that before.

Doh! Didn't read the first post.

All the larger Schwalbe tyres I have had have been a fairly loose fit. The Big Apples I have now would easily roll off if I let the pressure get low enough.

They have fairly high side walls so start bunching up when the pressure gets low.

The pressure was 80psi though, pumped them before I left

Just reread. So you're saying you got off the bike and saw that your fully inflated tyre looked like it wasn't seated properly. Then got back on the bike and started riding and got a blowout?

No that would be stupid. It exploded itself when I placed the bike on the ground. The rim and tyre must have pinched it

Put a new innwer tube in and that exploded as it was being pumped. The tyre and rim look fine though. Don't get it?
Guess I better order a new tyre. Are the city jets the best you can get for mountain bikes on road? I'm not that impressed tbh, they've only done 1000 miles.

I wonder if you had the tube properly up in the tyre. On bigger tyres like you get on mountain bikes, the tube almost sits above the rim and pushes the bead down against it. I'd hazard a guess that the bead popped off the rim and with 80psi in, the tube would just go off like a bomb through the gap.

I usually put about 10psi in them then give the valve a good shove up into the wheel to make sure it's up and in there properly. Then I go round the whole wheel rocking the tyre back and forth in a sorty of rolling motion to make sure the beads are seating fully on the rim and the tube is free to move up inside the tyre without being pinched anywhere. Then I put the rest of the air in.

Seems ok now, got a new City Jet tyre, bead was damaged on the old one. New inner tube and its holding, still a bit concerned so ordered a pump and a tube repair kit.
Will attempt the ride some other time
