Soon companies will be able to sue governments if profits are hit by new laws...

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/18/will_the_useu_treaty_stop_brussels_acting_against_us_tech_giants/

This could seriously affect my pro-EU stance.

Pretty clear who's in charge. Corporations. Illuminati-style hegemony. All about the wealth of the few in order to have the best toys.

Homo sapiens, pathetic.

Illuminati make me think of conspiracy, the reality is far more mundane... People are out to get what's best for them and the combined stupidity of many individuals leads to this. Not the considered conspiracy many assume.

Either way... Companies acting in the pursuit of profit having a way to trump governments (supposedly) acting for the benefit of their citizens will not bode well...

From wikipedia, but here's a good example for anyone thinking that "if properly implemented it won't change things"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investor-state_dispute_settlement#Chemtura_Corporation_v._Canada

Chemtura lost its pesticide claim against Canada. Canada banned pesticides it decided were unsafe. Seems fair...
Then... Canada/Quebec settled with Dow AgroSciences after banning another type of pesticide. Why would it settle? Possibly because the cost of legal proceedings is greater than any likely settlement.

Large corporations with pockets as deep as many countries will be able to influence using the system, even if the tribunals themselves are fair and reasonable.
