I've not said to give up 4 wheels.

However, the 796 is a bike I wouldn't even consider when thinking supermoto. It is definitely the rich mans commuter-moto.

i rode road legal enduros and supermotors for years,
for commuting purposes they are by far and away the best bike for the job, superlight, agile, and fast enough, and stairs are no match for them,
if you want sustained high speed or long distance touring, then, not at all suitable for the job

the fmx is a really crap supermoto, detuned from an already very untuned engine from the xr650

a modern watercooled 250 single has more power

I know it's detuned, but as I've said, I expected more. My mate's actually working on getting the bike a bit faster. The eco system off, open exhaust, maybe a FCR flat slide carburetor and so on. I say it's a waste of money, well he thinks otherwise. Rolling Eyes

So far the bike costed around 900 pounds, very low mileage. The owner bought it brand new, then it was stolen and after returned back to him, he just sold it for 750 pounds, it took about 150 pounds to get it back on the road again. A decent FMX goes around 2200 pounds here. A ruined one is still around 2000, so 750 pounds was a good deal, in a way, after all. The bike only needed new locks, new VIN on the frame and new engine serial number, new rear turn signal and that was about it.

cams is where he should spend his money, a decent set of cams out of the states for an xr650 will set him back less than the price of a new carb and will potentially give him 50-80% more power
a well set up xr650 motor will put out 60-70hp compared to the paltry 28-30 the fmx have

(when i say set i actually mean 1 cam Very Happy )

Always wanted a supermoto xr650r. The motor in an fmx 650 may as well be a ditch pump, and it's heavy for what it is. A proper full blown supermoto is a converted competition dirt bike, not a 'fun' commuter. Something you ride at the weekends because it's a hand grenade with the pin pulled.

If you ever get the chance to ride an sxv550 Aprilia then do it, it will alter your face permanently. Then give it back quick before it needs a rebuild.

No experience of the 650 motor but on my DRZ a bigger carb made it feel like a new bike, new cams changed the power delivery and seemed to pull for longer but for me the carb was a massive difference Thumbs Up Obviously for all that stuff you want a good exhaust too, gets expensive fast Thumbs Up

You'd think they'd have a better calliper on the front at that price and power Question Although it is pretty light... I'd still want more bling though Cool

You didn't road test a Supermoto. You road tested a donkey. Laughing

Go bag yourself on a proper Supermoto (I.E - A converted MOTOX bike, something that was never made to be road legal), and then reconsider your comments.

I've had some epic bikes over the last 10 years, TLR1000, 4xV, 'Busa, Bandit1200 and so on.
My YZ450F, was by far, the best to ride of the lot. Far from slow, would thrash anything off the lights, nice high riding position, good view of the road, great in the wet, great in the snow (With the MX wheels on), brakes were fantastic.

The only let downs really, were poor tank range, and the fear of it being stolen every time I got off it.

An FMX nearly put me under a truck while I was out on test ride.

Honda Dominator/SLR in a party frock. Laughing

Maico 490's are evil enough to ride, so I can only imagine what the 700 would be like. Not sure i would want to live with one as an everyday bike. Laughing

It is nice to have the choice and my converted ex-race XR400R is so much fun when I do get around to riding it

Looks good Tom, but all I can see, are long days in the garage, rather than having fun on the bike. Thumbs Down
