I need a 4.5" wide and 17" diameter rim so I can get a 160/60/17 on it, normal rim is 4" so will need I reckon to space out front sprocket 1/4"

But can't be certain till I have them

Seems as though a 160/60/17 does fit on a 4" rim. Awesome!

im debating whether or not to play with this engine or just build it up as stock.

its going to look stock on the outside. i might end up doing a bit of blueprinting and taking some weight off the crank and clutch primary gear.

I went through the thread and I'm thinking of taking my ZX7R apart. Very inspirational thread, thanks for sharing. Thumbs Up

Now, I'm fixing the exhaust, the crack on it was welded the other day, I sandpapered it, today gave it the first layer of paint and I think I'm not done yet. New f/r wheel and swing arm bearings are next on my list. Smile

Nice.

Will an engine painter paint a non stripped engine?

i have no idea.

dunno how you'd get it clean enough to do a really decent job.

this one was split down to the bare cases, everything soda blasted back to bare metal and then painted, so its all mint.

imagine you'd have some pockets of grime and stuff if you didn't get it properly cleaned before hand. (i know i did when i tried to paint the bandit engine myself)

picked up a lifetime supply of engine bits.

theres about 3 engines worth of bits, all stripped.

i have the decent painted crankcases i had done a few years ago, so i'll probably rob the best of these internals to build a totally stock motor in the painted cases and then build a 'development' motor (442 kit, knife edged crank, ported head, timed cams ect... ) using all the bits i've just picked up.

so yeah.

i cant be arsed re typing all this so i'll just paste it.

tl;dr decided to build a 5mm stroker engine with 3mm over bore giving 494 cc

using a mix of 71b (first gen gsxr400) and 73a (third gen gsxr400) parts.

71b camchain is a different type to 73a, so 71b cam sprockets will be needed.

73a conrods fit onto 71b crank.

71b crank counterbalance webs on 2+3 foul on the oil filter casting inside the 73a cases. just need a very small dish grinding into the crankcase.

believe that the 73a sprag clutch and ignition rotor will fit onto the 71b crank, with a little bit of machine work.

fitting the k5 generator rotor to the 71b crank will be somewhat more difficult. need to think about it.

the above pictures are a 71b crank fitted with 73a rods in a set of 73a cases.

i need a 71b outer clutch basket before i can go any further.

the gear profile on the 71b/73a is the same, however the 73a clutch gear is too big (diameter) when using a 71b crank.

i believe the below spec will be what i end up using;

73a cases
71b crank
73a rods
73a barrels (possibly with fzr 600 3he liners)
fzr600 3he pistons
73a head
73a cams (with 71b sprockets)
73a clutch (with 71b primary gear reworked to fit)
73a gearbox
73a sprag clutch and ing rotor
gsxr 1000 k5 rotor / stator
katana 400 clutch cover with adapter to suit k5 stator

all liners pressed out of the 73a block and soda blasted

https://scontent-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/10307392_10152734950603365_8129360779556636909_n.jpg?oh=a563e0f4d7c00b65813bb8bf5df57404&oe=557329D6

all liners pressed out the 3he block and modified to suit the 73a cases

https://scontent-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/11025231_10152734950633365_1346147524783198279_n.jpg?oh=3a76a271ffd9953cec7dbbb48842926c&oe=5579CDB2

3he pistons just need soda blasting and then valve pockets doing once i've done a dry build to work it all out.

https://scontent-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/q81/s720x720/11068395_10152734950593365_6222864364154627650_n.jpg?oh=940bf632aa1bf6a47141028766975817&oe=5571CA90

will drop the block and liners off next week to get them fitted together. just need to re machine the spigot counterbores in the block first.

its pretty much a piece of piss, apart from a little bit of machining to the crank and cases.

also, none of the gsxr 400 (71b, 71f, 73a, 76a or rf400 or any bandit 400) clutch basket primary gears will fit with my combination of crank and cases.

so will need to work out what gear i need and call in a favor to get it cut into a blank. will then machine the rest so it just fits the back of a 73a clutch basket.

block clocked up to open out the flange counterbores.

new liners fitted in.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10428540_10152736539133365_3546070465029867336_n.jpg?oh=e2108d23a8c25e64ce5225b71378f7f8&oe=55757F09&__gda__=1433404268_0936917f929aa9931fd49c077c4e0bf2

this is an issue. i'll get around it by using gsxr 1100 head dowels which are a solid D, rather than the original hollow circular ones.
