right! I remembered my laptop so I was able to carry on this week.

how little i knew of the horrors that were to unfold... Sad

found TDC, stuck a breaker bar on the big nut and cable tied it to the exhaust to stop it moving.
then I put a pin in the cam chain tensioner and took out the cam chain sprocket nuts:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1416_zpsf97ffa70.jpg

before using more cable ties and removing the camshaft.

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1417_zpsdcc928c9.jpg

bit of pulling later and OFF WITH ITS HEAD!!!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1418_zps9ee1aac7.jpg

the observant among you will have noticed the socket, that was where the other spark plug was and I couldn't shift it until I got the head off!

so one very fucked looking head gasket

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1419_zpsee597ec2.jpg

valve side of the head, reasonably OK...ish! you can see the 2 spark plug holes better in this pic.

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1420_zpsdb8a379e.jpg

then....

i noticed after removing the very scabby gasket that there was something wrong with the piston crown.

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1423_zpsa161b3f4.jpg

buggering bollocks and arseholes! Mad Mad

the piston has a bloody big hole in the edge.

Efes123, i'll be PMing you to ask how much do you want for the front barrel and piston from that spare engine of yours?

IP, I'd negotiate for the whole motor; and see if you can dress out with the parts it needs from your engine and do a straight swap.
Cut a long story short, or I can see you ending up at the same place, doing it piece meal as you bury further and further in.
Then you have your original lump on the bench and can take your time to re-con it thoroughly, if you want, or use THAT as the parts donor against future failures.

I have a VT engine down in cornwall, all complete I think bar rocker covers and starter motor.

I bought it from a breakers to put in my misfiring VT, but never got round to fitting it, sold the VT and so said engine has sat in my mates barn since 2010.

Paint work looked pretty good as far as I can remember, absolutely no idea what internals are like , but it was sold to me as a good engine from breakers. I literally picked it up, took it to my mates workshop where it has sat since.

You're welcome to it if you'd like. Otherwise it's just gonna get whacked into a job lot of old bike shit and sent to auction soon.

why did Honda insist on using silly bolt sizes? all the bolts in the head are 12 or 14mm and not the 13 and 15 i was expecting.

Won't find anything 13mm on a Honda. They considered it unlucky. Great thread mate & you've had some shit luck but persevere & that VT will look after you. I loved mines, it was white & with the black engine it looked pretty cool. I dropped it & smashed the headlamp & replaced it with a small round one & it looked even better. They go forever as long as you keep putting oil in. Must've put 150,000 miles on mine & I found them much more reliable & less lardy than the Revere/NTV that replaced 'em. If it starts to stink like rotten eggs then your genny's cooking the battery. Check the plastic connector block 'cos they melt & cause this fairly embarrassing problem. You've made me miss my ol' VT now Sad

So... in preparation for a replacement engine I decided to get the broken one out of the way.

and probably junk the thermostat at the same time! Laughing

found all the electrical connections, like the Stator, oil pressure, the engine earth and the starter motor.

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1451_zps03ef6cde.jpg

then I stuck a trolley jack under the engine and undid the engine bolts, turns out the right side of the frame unbolts to let the engine out. so after about an hour of undoing bolts and cursing i got it out
...mostly because it fell off the jack! Embarassed

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1453_zps1a12888c.jpg

it looks somewhat naked without the engine...

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1454_zps30d6fcda.jpg

so the hunt is on!!!

Funny you should mention that! Laughing

Spent Friday evening after work recovering the bike from the in laws to Mrs Phrealy's (pending) house.

4 and a half miles of this:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/IMG_7439741553825_zps9bee2afc.jpg

with about a hundred yards of gravity assisted this:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/IMG_7433613593626_zps77f58d2e.jpg

yesterday started stripping the covers off my buggered engine to attach to the engine I got off Smegballs.
it seems such a shame to put such a nice looking engine in my bike!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1498_zps95aaa863.jpg

Smegballs' was the one on the left, and yes, i know I'm Captain Obvious.

I checked the clutch wasn't stuck solid, and swapped release bearings over. going to sort the other side in a moment and then into the bike. Thumbs Up

yeah, Mrs Phrealy (pending) did the walk with me. Wub

only took 2 1/2 hours, found loads of Blackberry and Elderberry bushes on the way back so methinks one night in the week we might go for a forage...

Oh, Got Smegballs engine in!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1500_zps33a8669a.jpg

also found the possible failure point of my previous engine...

yep, that's the water pump. Embarassed

Looks to me like the blown gaket was incidental. Large pistons are more prone to detonation and it looks like that's what blew the gasket, and the piston too - the woodpecker-type damage on the crown gives it away. Probably a combination of low coolant making the engine run hot, possibly running lean, extended load with a large rider plus pillion then going for the overtake pushed up your cylinder temps until it started detonating which blew the cylinder and knocked the ring land off the piston. The way to prove it is to see if the rings are tight in the grooves, if they are - it's detonated.

Check your fuelling on the new engine. If it's running lean you better sort it or risk the same again.

the running lean makes sense, especially as the needle valve wasn't opening properly due to a perforated diaphragm in the carb.
that and the previous owner not knowing there was an expansion tank...
The rings are still tight in the grooves of the front cylinder.

Well sir, maximum karma points for that. I pushed my Blackbird for 1/2 mile or there abouts and was thoroughly fucked. Laughing

so then, stage whateveritis.

connected the carb up, stuck the tank on, attached the exhaust pipes and put some oil in.
...and this happened!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1507_zpsadcb830e.jpg

on account of me not noticing this hole was missing a plug. Mad

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1508_zps30c082ac.jpg

so it looks like a bike again! Dance!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1506_zpsd6522067.jpg

...but even after pulling the plug from my busted engine it is leaking from round the clutch cover.
but I buggered my last 5mm allen driver putting the side covers on, so when they get here i'll pull the side cover off, and either get a proper gasket or instagasket if I can't get one.

it's also leaking a bit of water from where the water pipes enter the engine block. David Silver Spares want about £3 for 1.
thinking that heatproof silicone Stinkwheel was talking about or instant gasket for them too! Laughing

I also took a pic of the buggered piston for Pete.
