I gather that a lot of bikers only have a car in case of emergency or dire need...

what cheap shitboxes do you all have and why?

I'm basically only using the bike these days and want something economical and all round cheap without being too small and too shit as a back up if the dog is ill or something or if the mrs makes me drive us somewhere

For last six years a 2004 Vauxhall Astra 2.2 SRI 3 door.

It's not economical. On average 25mpg
Big enough for me, wife and 2 kids.
Expensive tax and insurance.
But.. I love it. Currently 74k miles on the clock. I bought it with 41k miles. I don't drive it enough.

Ford C-Max. Big enough to take the kids, grand kids and dogs out. Big enough to tow a trailer. Cheap to buy and run. Actually not that bad to drive Shocked

Or regional equivalent.

you've not tried using public transport outside of a large town or city in the north have you?

£5 for two miles on the bus, which probably won't turn up or £10 for the steam train if it's running today.

Citroen C3 1.4, because it was cheap.

I mention this because you should not get one, at least if you like paint that stays intact, doors that lock and unlock, or an engine that regularly fires on all cylinders.

I seem to have amassed a collection of ford focuses. The 1.8 seems to be a good compromise between power and economy. 1.6 are gutless. Interior on the Mk2+ is very nice, mk1 is a bit retro. I avoid modern diesels as I don't want to be lumped with paying out on a new turbo, DMF etc etc etc and I don't do many 4 wheeled miles.

Not the greatest built cars in the world, but mine have been absolute bargains, been reliable and consumables are much cheaper than for the equivalent Jap/german cars. I'll be track daying a mk1 when I get some spare time/moneys, handles very well for a FWD shitbox.

Same here, got the 1.8. Had a new clutch switch and speedo sensor a little while ago, but otherwise no problems. Under 30k on the clock, 2004, and it was FREE! Very Happy Road tax is the only downside really.

MkIII Micra.
Its not a shit-box. It's actually one of the quietest, most dependable car I've ever owned, and about £4k cheaper than the car I would have liked to have bought instead...

For personal transport, I had a sucession of shitbox rusty white vans for moving big stuff like motorbikes and going camping in.

Last one was a Vauxhall Midi which I paid £500 for, drove for 2 years, got a cheeky MOT for and sold again for £350.

Now I have a company van.

Currently 1993 VW polo 1.0. It needs to be on 2000 revs before it has the guts to move itself and struggles to hit 70 but it was cheap to buy and classic insurance.

I have agreed to buy a low mileage (for the age, 60,000) 1998 Pug 306 on Thursday though. 1.8 petrol, so the largest engine I've ever owned in a car and amazingly its in a cheaper insurance group than the 1.3 hyundai thats going to the tip soon...

Last car I owned was a six litre V12 Mercedes CL600. Nice car and for a Merc it was pretty good at fording.

https://i.imgur.com/dbZMSYH.jpg

It was 'cheap' because it wasn't the bi-turbo CL600. Sad

4x4 MPV, Small SUV prone to rolling over and a grey import MX5. Though I'd wager all three are actually grey imports.

Technically, of course, we haven't met.
