Aye, NI seems to have gold plated the MOT test and now checks things that the mainland doesn't bother with. Go back to the 1970s and the NI MOT was far more lax and far less frequent. Way things are going the NI MOT will be required daily, with any sign of wear from new being a fail.

All the best

Ok, so one of the exhaust lockrings was missing. They look identical to normal Villiers/BSA etc lock rings except they are metric not imperial, so there was no chance that I'd be able to find one on eBay. So I took the one I had and one of the mufflers to a local engineering place and they made me this copy out of stainless steel for £35. It would have been £60 for a pair, so not bad, but I figured I'd stay with only replacing whats missing rather than being obssesive about matching parts.

I got a new seat cover made buy Dis-Covers.com for £30, it's damn nice, but was a little tight to fit. I shouldve thought about it a bit more when fitting it and covered some of the seat bases sharp edges better because it torn a little bit.

The throttle is a larger diameter than the standard 25mm, meaning any grips I but wont fit. so decided to get some bicycle grip tape and make my own grips. The trottle is just wrapped as is, where as the left hand side wouldve been much thinner, so I bulked it up with sitcky back draft excluding foam.

Heres how the handlebars look finished. The switch gear are Lucas replicas. we bought the lights and horn one originally before deciding to put on the indicators, so later bought that one too. To be honest they are crap and awkward, but do fit the look. However! -they are a pain to fit, the wires are too thin, the indicatr mounts in the wrong direction side by side means the light switch in miles away from my thumb. Thumbs Down

With everything virtually back together and ready we filled up the tank to try and start it, but turns out we didnt do such a good job with the carb. They were pissing fuel everywhere. Hastily let it drain back into the jerrycan then we stripped everything again and this time used a different hylomar and rebuilt the petcock too. Its still not perfect but it seems like its as good as its going to get.

Great find. I love these bike. Their made to be used in all invironments, urban and forest roads. And if any of you seen a forest road ull apreciate it even more. I remember seeing an old soviet bike with a side cart going through knee high mud like it was a spanish road, had a reverse gear as well Very Happy. My grandad had IZH's and URAL's all his life, and the URAL was the first bike i had a go on when i was a nipper. Nearly smashed it into a ditch. These things will last the cold war over and over again. Half the steel factory is in one bike. I WANT ONE!

Ive seen a youtube vid of the version with a reverse gear, that one was a trike configuration with a big wooden rack on the back Laughing

Heres how its looking virtually finished. Still lots of things to do - seat strap, fix the leaking fork, do something with the carb, another new ignition & change the charging wiring a bit as at the moment its not charging the battery enough when running. Need to do a few little touch ups on the paint too, manage to scratch the rack a bit when I was dicking around with the uncovered seat, and the fork will need lots of repainting after we finally get round to tryin to fix it. Need to make a new second pillion peg as well.

Have ridden it around the block a few times and its so much fun, very comfy riding position, just feels really natural and easy, handling it fine considering one fork is half empty. Has some serious flat spots in the throttle - which will be due to the carb being a bodge job. Sounds great and leaves a twin smoke trail behind me Very Happy

These are sought after now, people love them. 25 years ago you literally couldn't give them away and you would have been laughed off the high street if you'd appeared on a Cossack (I did one day...and was Laughing ).

But I've always been a fan of agricultural strokers, especially Iron Curtain...erm...iron. Loving this rebuild. This, is has to be said, is a proper bike. Never mind your XYZRRR plastic missiles Laughing

Thank you for sharing it's wonderful orangeness with us.

It looks like it has the kickstart on the same spline as the gear change? How does that work?

Old thread, but still I wonder... How did this project end? MOT and after that miles of smiles?

And how about twin spark and replacing compression valve?

(... the reason for asking is that I did pick up two Voskhods last week in the souther part of Norway Laughing One has plates on, the other one is unknown to the authorities The world's smallest violin player, just for you! I think I can use this thread as a cooking book for getting at leasy the one with plates back on the road again)
