So in a few weeks I'll need to transfer a few grand from my UK account to my australian one. Reading around it seems that currency brokers do a much better deal than a standard bank-to-bank transaction. Can anyone recommend any companies or have general tips on how to make it all run smoothly??

You kids have it so easy. In 1983 if I wanted to move money from Zimbabwe to the free world I had to use my initiative.
Soap stone carvings hollowed out and filled with emeralds, Crutches stuffed full of rolled up dutch bank notes and gold melted down and cast (and over painted) as a brake lever.

My parents and I have used it quite a few times now to send fairly big chunks of money between the UK and Germany and it is way cheaper than banks and we haven't had any problems so far.

Used transferwise a few times, I've had problems with my banks stopping the payments due to "suspicious activity".

This is not a problem with transferwise, but the bank (Natwest and HBOS). It's just a warning the you may face problems due to your bank with. Reported here too.

Hetzer (does anyone remember him?) recommended https://www.torfx.com to me and I subsequently would recommend them.

As with all if these companies, check the rates - particularly for small amounts they can be a lot closer to the standard bank rates. They also class small amounts as 4 figures.

A tip would be to let them know if you're not in a rush - they can book a transfer in and often give a much better rate than doing it that day.

You need to write an autobiography.

You forgot to mention the sizeable roll of gold sovereigns you stuffed up yer bum?

I heard it came to a tidy sum, but they did have to launder the money afterwards.

Have you considered this method Mr Smegballs?

I use World First to transfer between UK and NZ.

Can't fault them.
