I have a Yamaha Yzf r6. I just got it about a week ago and sometimes it won't start unless I push start it. The battery has juice because the lights are on. The engine will turn over a little bit. I don't know what could be wrong. It also seems to be doing it when it's cold.

do a volts drop test on battery.......

with ign off connect dmm leads to the battery terminals..........13.2volts volts or close.good

turn ign on and repeat.........12.9volts or close.......good

crank with ign killed say 6 compressions.........10 volts or over........good, under 10 volts ish then think about battery replacement.

when engine is running and the lights are on, does the h/light grow brighter when eng revved to say 4k revs?good

connect dmm as before, and rev eng from idle to say 4k revs, does dmm show 13 volts or close at idle and 14.5 volts or close......at 4 k revs.......good

how about when the lights are on??good

it may be a charge system fault or most likely a failing battery......

That's a low battery. The fact that the lights come on is largely immaterial - the starter motor requires significantly more power than the lights do.

My CBR wouldn't like starting when it was warmed up and running at high temp.

A Motobatt sorted that.

And a new radiator sorted the high temp (120 degrees on a commute for example) Laughing

Yes, I'm in London and commute to Oxford Street.

The old rad was f*cked though.

New battery will sort it. Yours may have volts but it is not delivering amps

Hi I don't know if anyone can help, I have NT 650 04 reg, I have not long had it it was running fine when I stopped at a cafe when it would not start, a jump start got it going and after a few time not starting I was advised a new battery was in order, I got a new battery and still not working, a garage said the chip in the key might need replacing but even the spare key wont make it start, had anyone had a similar problem and what was the out come, if it is the security system Honda wants over a grand to fix it and then they say that might not do it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Goasthunter

It dose not start is not a great description!

key in turn on
Dose the hiss light come on go out ?
dose the engine spin over ?

The hiss chip code is registered in the ECU in memory that is maintained even without power so unless you somehow spiked the ECU the hiss system should be fine

Does it have an immobiliser. Some have built in batteries (Meta for example). The battery starts dying after about ten years and gives all the symptoms of a dying main battery or the charging not working.

Hence talk of chiped key

The point I'm trying to make is that if it has an immobiliser that has it's own internal battery, then if it is dying you'll get those symptoms. I strongly suspect a factory immobiliser works in this way.

I just got my battery tested and it was reading above 12 volts so it doesn't look like it is the battery since it's charged. I was told by the bike shop that it's probably the connections.

So, "the battery was over 12 volts".

Was that under load? If so, what load?

Setesh, just put a new battery on it. You have all the symptoms of a tired battery, and you don't want to cook the regulator.

Connection - pull, clean, re-seat.
If the battery is more than five years old replace it anyway. Motorcycle batteries don't have a great guaranteed working life.
Next you start worrying about the immobiliser, before any of the other bits.

That is the route I went down. Replaced the immobiliser with a bypass plug, never had a problem since. That was about six months ago.
