I need to change the rear on my Carerra TDF .

it has a screw on 7 speed 14-28 freewheel sprocket as standard.

Want to fit a 12-28 .

Cannot seem to find any online. Just cassette ones.

Am I just better buying a new rear wheel and fitting a cassette ?

12s are always a bit of a pain to get on a freewheel (I think it's partly to do with the physical size needed for bearings/pawls in there). Changing to a cassette system would let you go down to 11 and give you a greater choice of bits, but it's quite an expensive upgrade and 7 speed cassettes are becoming rarer too. On my old bike (which started life as friction shifted 10 speed - i.e. 5 on the back) I ended up going to 9 speed so I could fit reasonable components. That does become expensive though, as you need new shifters and possibly new mechs.

I'd be tempted to go for 13/28, and if that's not enough then up the teeth on the large chainring. You could always just practice spinning and up your cadence, which is free Smile

Cheers dude.

Just feel that I'm running out of gears if you know what I mean.

Dinnae want to spend a fortune as it aint an expensive bike.

Would I be able to run a cassette wheel with a 7 speed on the bike ?

I know what you mean about running out of gears; I'm a natural masher rather than spinner (properly tested doing VO2Max and various other bits of kit to test my left/right power output and efficiencies at different cadences as part of a study - it showed that my highest efficiency is about 70rpm). Having said that, I can up towards 200rpm on fixed...

A cassette wheel should be fine as a drop-in. I've done the whole upgrade bit from 5 speed freewheel up to 9 speed cassette (via 6, 7 and 8 over the decades) without any real problems other than respacing the frame between 6 and 7 (went from 125mm between dropouts to the modern 130mm). Double check your dropout spacing, as you don't want to be flexing an aluminium frame.

Sun-race do a 12-28 screw on freewheel which turn up occasionally on Ebay but a 13-28 is more common.
14-28 are just way to low for on road use especially if you have a 44t front chainring.

Cheers folks.
The bike has been looked after, bu having done nearly 2,500 miles on it in 11 months.

Just gonna get another wheel with the same sprocket. The Spindle is now grinding and not running as smooth as it was.
Use it as a trainer / winter bike.
Finish up paying for it this month on cycle to work scheme.

So will be looking to get another one.

Separate thread for ideas will be up
