After reading about these bikes and seeing the thread on here about the 'scariest bikes you've ridden', I decided to look out one of these to see what the fuss was about and this came up for sale about 30 miles away. It is absolutely pristine, and I do mean pristine. It is in as good condition (if not better) than the 13 plate mint Gixxer I had. 13k miles, all servicing kept up with.

Extras wise, some R&G stuff, screen, seat hump, tail tidy, integrated rear light/indicator unit and the kicker... A Racefit Growler! The noise of this thing is just amazing. It's had the wheels powdercoated green as well, which I think look good. In the flesh, they match the paintwork but look different in photos...

It's an '04. The can is just stupid loud. At idle it's not crazy unless it's a cold start, but when it gets over 6k it's mental. I'm definitely going to feel bad doing my midnight Tesco runs on this thing. It came with a baffle but I can't see it doing much.

Amazing bikes, I'll own one again I expect. Mine had a racefit as well albeit a slash cut.

I wasn't no, but I'm going down tomorrow, see if I can get some leather trousers with sliders that will fit. I only got the bike on Saturday.

My girlfriend recorded an audio clip of me on the bike, I listened to it along with my helmet camera, and you can hear the bike at the redline about three quarters of a mile away.

Ah I see, in that case there's someone else with very similar mods. Although it did seem like his swingarm was stretched.

From what I heard, I wouldn't be surprised if you could hear it redline over a mile away Very Happy

I know MCS had one in at the start of the year and someone recently sold a black one on a Facebook group, so there's a couple about up this way.

It's hard for me to say so far. It is definitely scary fast, but the way it handles, it feels like you're going much slower than you are. Usually I find sports bikes too forward focussed and it makes turning annoying, but this thing is bang on. I'm already taking normal bends 15mph (or more) faster than I was on the Z1000. I think that false sense of security is what's biting people in the ass, although I did get the back sliding out a bit when I was passing a petrol station but I'm used to it, I used to slide the Z for fun.

The steering damper definitely needs set up properly, it does shake a bit more than I'd like when landing a high wheelie. According to MCNews it's the 4th highest power to weight ratio of any production bike, so when you bang it down to first or second on the motorway it is proper rocket-ship stuff.

I'm going to take all the stickers off it, maybe see if I can get a racefit one to lacquer onto the can but that's it.

That looks very clean, and I like the plain green of these ZX10R's. It's the best looking ZX10R ever IMO, the newer ones look really fugly just like the current R1 and Blade.

I know very little about them, but I'm sure people always said it was the next bike after the 98 R1 that could bite back and be a real handful. In fact most of the 150-170bhp Litre bikes seem to have more of a lairy reputation than todays electronically assisted 190-200bhp screamer's. I bet an 04 ZX10R has more midrange than a 2014 version too!

Midrange seems about the same as my '13 GSXR 1000, but I do notice the front coming up easier on this, so perhaps it is better. I know midrange took a dive in '07 when the EU emissions stuff came in, but I don't know how it recovered since then.

I think the modern ZX10R looks horrible. It looks like a Z1000SX which isn't much of a compliment. It just doesn't look sporty, but they're supposed to be good bikes. I think that Ducati are the only company consistently producing bikes that look good.
