HI All
I have an occasional need for a bike that will cover 150+ miles on roads reasonably comfortably then tackle some green-laning type of stuff at the end. I can't justify the cost of a 'proper' dual sport bike and in any case I think they might be too heavy. I was wondering though if you could take a boggo commuter like an ER5 at fit a longer travel set of forks (KL250 ?) high mudgaurds and dual sport tyres.
This could be cheaper alternative, light enough and a bit of fun in the process. Any thoughts about this ?
Cheers

They are very heavy though. 180KG+ I think. I had one for a year. They are ok as long as you don't expect too much from it. ____________________ KTM 990 SMT & Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM |

Hi Folks
Back on this again and part way through shamelessly copying the bike above.. I have a cheap GS and also the front end off a DR650 (pre95). I have also swapped the stem from the GS into the DR bottom yoke so fitting the new front end should be OK..
Next hurdle however are the steering stops. For some reason on the (aluminium) DR yoke they are not symmetrical wrt the clamps (as they are on teh GS) so something has to change. Options are:-
a) grind off DR stop stubs off the yoke and drill and tap the yoke to fit some bolts to act as stops
b) grind off the GS500 headstock stop tab and move it to a different postion to accommodate the DR existing stubs.
I would prefer to do a) (mailnly cos my welding is cr@p but have some concerns about weakening the yoke - although the holes would not be near any of the strength webs..
Thoughts ?
