Hi all

Just picked up these two Honda CBR600FL bikes which have been sitting for years. One of them has a tax disk from 2007 Shocked

Got the logbooks etc and they were running before being stored in a garage and left.

Plan is to get them both running again and restored to former glory.

If anyone has any parts for these bikes or know of then please let me know! Thumbs Up

Ideally after all the fairings!

Hope you got a bargain! I really liked my FP, but I wouldn't fancy pouring money into one in that condition, they don't tend to go for enough IMO.

Not to rain on your parade or anything.

Sell the engines and electrics, scrap the rest and have enough money left over to buy a nice example.

Or Go-kart.

I'm guessing he wants a project rather than doing it for financial gain.

Who mentioned financial gain?

If the purpose is specifically to make a project of it then fair enough but as C-dug says they are not high value bikes even as mint so the cost of spares could easily out-weigh the final value. No point making a financial loss of a load of hard work.

Having had an FK jellymould as a first big bike i can say they are a lot of fun. Mine had around 45k on it but ran sweet as a nut as long as the valve gaps were in tolerance and the carbs balanced nicely. Skinny tyres weren't the greatest but it certainly gave me a lot of confidence, forgiving handling and the brakes didn't take much effort either.

Change the reg/rec for a mosfet type as they do let go and fry the battery apparently although mine never did in 18 months of ownership...all on the original unit.

Best of luck with the fairings tho...they do seem to be the original rockinghorse poo. I couldn't even find some chinky replacements for mine, and the odd panels that came up on ebay were tattier than the ones i already had.

The only problem i ever had with it was one of the two mounting bolts for the sidestand went loose and dropped out somewhere!

Hi all

Thanks for replies, I can appreciate what you're saying as I know they don't go for a lot even in good condition! Not doing this for a profit or even a loss going too mad.

I heard 2 CBRs had been locked away for a number of years and needed a good home. First heard that you could make 1 bike out of 2.

It wasn't till I got there that I found out they were F1 models rather than F2.

Plan was to make one roadworthy for a friend stepping up from a 400 and whatever's left I keep for my F2.

Now the plan is, yellow one is going to be built up with my friend and he will use for work. The other my dad will restore after he's finished building up a CB750, so could be a while yet.

Not a lot of money will be put into these but we will get them looking nice and clean and running again.

Going Saturday to a bike that's been stripped down to source some parts and get started on the yellow bike.

Is an Asbestos label unless I'm mistaken? What is it?

I remember having one on the frame of my KX250 of same era.

Am guessing it was some legislative thing regarding the brake pads or maybe gaskets?

Yeah it's a asbestos label for sure. Not sure where is affected though.

Thanks Stoney will keep in mind. Got any spares?

My first KMX200 also had the 'a' label under the seat like that CBR does.

I can see all the points of view, but they don't look like total wrecks worth scrapping for the sake of a few quid either? There should be at least 75% of a good bike between all the parts from both bikes, and some useful spares to keep as well.

Good luck with the re-builds!

So we've spent a few evenings and weekends when we've had the chance to have a go at a few things!

First priority was to get them started. We only had 1 set of keys for the red bike until the previous owner found the yellow bikes keys (now found and I've got) so we had the bikes side by side switching over the switches so we could use one ignition.

https://i.imgur.com/xdlbohml.jpg

We didn't manage to get the red bike started but I think that's down to needing new plugs and the carbs a good clean out. The yellow bike started up after a little T&C.

The red bike is now going into my dads possession so we won't be touching it, but it will scrub up! (My dad usually does concourse restorations so will be interesting to see how it turns out, I don't think he wants to spend a great deal on this)

To get a good idea on what we needed to do, the yellow bike needed a big clean.

So far on the yellow bike we have:

- Put in new spark plugs
- New air filter
- Oil and filter change
- Drained oil fuel out
- Cleaned up the micron exhaust ready for fitment

https://i.imgur.com/k9nNJEbl.jpg

- Cleaned up engine by the exhausts

https://i.imgur.com/47qhtcMl.jpg

- Cleaned up forks/calipers

https://i.imgur.com/2ULlJ6Zl.jpg

- Cleaned up front of bike

- Cleaned up rear subframe area

https://i.imgur.com/CYg9t0Ql.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/C2pN5WOl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/ul3fLIIl.jpg

- Removed rear mudguard for more access to clean swing arm

- Cleaned up swing arm and chain area/front sprocket (no after pics of swing arm but it came up very well)

- Cleaned up rear sprocket

https://i.imgur.com/FwD1Swel.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/PHt2CBZl.jpg

- Cleaned and adjusted chain

https://i.imgur.com/Ziz4Xg8l.jpg

- Inside the tank is rusty so drained all the old fuel/rust then removed the filter and bunged up the hole. Then used a rust solution in the tank and have left that for now.

https://i.imgur.com/FkEfUu1l.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/fgNGVtIl.jpg

- Swapped exhausts over from the red bike (downpipes and end can)
- Acquired lots of spares from a bike that was being broken

https://i.imgur.com/VjftYySl.jpg

- Swapped from black wheels to white wheels including changing the front discs over

https://i.imgur.com/M4jyFWHl.jpg

- Resprayed front subframe (to replace rusty/badly welded current one) although need to go back to it as it fell on the grass whilst spraying!

https://i.imgur.com/WLQt8Arl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/tQCEZrNl.jpg

Here is the original one on the bike. It has bent brackets, bad welds and even bits missing!

https://i.imgur.com/PZ1989xl.jpg

Also decided on a paint scheme from a early poster (craigs23) his old VFR:

https://i.imgur.com/lNYdPMil.png

Here is how we left it:

Still a few jobs to keep us going for now till it's finished Very Happy

Good progress Thumbs Up

If you ever want to clean up a totally minging bike again this is what I do:

Get a few litres of traffic film remover and a 20litre plastic drum. Pour the TFR into the drum and fill up with piping hot water, it'll turn a milky white colour. Gravity-feed this into your jetwash and use it to blast the bike right over. Pay attention to the heavily soiled bits. Leave for 15-20 mins then hit it again with the jetwash. You'll be amazed at the crap that come off.

Don't do it on your mum's driveway.
