Hi Everyone.
As always, looking to upgrade, but this time with more touring in mind. At the moment I'm weekday commuting, weekend ride outs and summer camping. In an effort to gather some info about the best MPG on tourers, I though I'd start this thread.
Lets get some fact out there.

Please post your Make, Model and Year with your MPG

..and then maybe why you chose that model.

Peace Cool

There you go, knock yourself out. Remember to change the units to UK.

Yamaha FJR1300
2009
Average Touring MPG: 42.5 (2 up, panniers, topbox and tank bag)
Solo Riding MPG: 42.5
Best ever MPG: 47.5
Worst ever MPG: 28 (125mph cruising on Autobahn- 2 up, panniers, topbox and tank bag)

If your looking at tourers then I suggest you look at more than MPG.

Reliability, Comfort, Fun, Luggage capability and ability to go long distances are maybe worth considering. Shaft drive?

FJR meets all these criteria brilliantly and having owned mine for 4 years would highly recommend Wink

Unless you're talking big mileage you're likely best not worrying about fuel costs and thinking more about service costs and interval plus parts / tyres.
https://nudges.wordpress.com/why-we-misunderstand-what-miles-per-gallon-ratings-are-telling-us/

Not checked the above link in detail as on phone but in reality you're talking about the difference of not a lot in fuel costs from 40mpg to 50 when you take the above into account as well

Why do I have the VFR1200? I had a shot on it and fell in love almost instantly. It is a lovely bike in the flesh, handles very well for a big lump, doesn't feel that big at all. It came with luggage, carries two but it seems my missus is never going to take to bikes. It does have a small tank range though, didn't concern me personally. Oh it's rather quick and very good suspension over UK roads, way better on the roads than my R1 and R6, although they are old (1999) so I guess can't compare in that way.

Negatives. It is not the best fuelling at low revs in low gears. (2010 manual). Can be fixed with aftermarket bits I do believe.

Would not buy a new one, they are way too dear, but my 2010 c/w luggage was a fair price and after 3 weeks owning I'm very happy with it.

Will be up for sale shortly after I lose my licence. Probably on an IAM outing, the buggers have me nearly chickenstripless on this VFR!!! Very Happy

My touring bike is a ZX12R because it's the only bike I have right now.

Was an ST1100 Pan until about 6 months ago.

Interesting?

https://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-top-10s/top-10-sports-tourers/11412.html

My ride:
Honda cbf 600
Gets about 40-45mpg commuting up to 50-55 on tour.
Naked never will be the best at long distance but if then weathers good then the ride is great. It moves well, but can be a little bulky and heavy.

I bought it because it was a good deal at the time, its easy to fix (naked) and a great teacher for new big bike riders.

Not sorry I bought it, just need to move up a level now.

Nothing beats the new NC700 in this category at the moment.
I've seen loads around town as a commuter, but how is it on long trips?

2012 Triumph Trophy 1200 SE

MPG - somewhere between 35 and fifty but I don't normally worry as it has a 200 mile tank range and I ride to enjoy, not scrimp Laughing

Heated grips and seats. Electric windscreen. Stereo. Electric suspension adjustment. Tyre pressure monitor. Embarassed

I like my comforts Thumbs Up

Honda Deauville
2001 Year
Typical 55-60mpg.

I wouldn't recommend one though. You'll buy one simply for the fuel economy and reliability but it may end up killing you from fvcking boredom.

2008 Suzuki Hayabusa.

No idea what the mpg is, but tank range is anywhere between 120 and 200 miles depending on the type of riding and how much kit I'm carrying, and costs around £23 to fill (in the U.K)

1997 Yamaha Thundercat. Mid-to-high 50s. Never below 50, even when pushing on/loaded up. I can get up to 200 miles out of a 15-and-a-bit litre tank.

Burgman 400 + Top Box, that's over 100 litres of storage, after 2007 they have a strong engine, feet stay dry, good weather protection. Probably get 80mpg.

Just to add, I have ridden this to central Germany and back over a long weekend - 1,500 miles and besides being a bit travel weary, I was comfortable all the way. And I had some fun on the roads whilst there. The fairing kept the worst weather off and it was Swiss watch reliable. This is why I have had it 13 years.

Yep its great, I've done a few 200+ mile trips, 2 up with full luggage and it's been fine. It's not an exciting bike by any means but it's great for those long motorway stretches. Still get nearly 200 miles to a tank!

I tried a friends and I was more comfortable and could tuck in far better then on my BB, surprising little bike.

The fuel consumption on my 1997 Thundercat was brilliant. I was working in Germany in 1999 and it returned something like 53mpg riding at a steady 110 on the Autobahn on a whiff of throttle and 45mpg at a steady 130.

That's a bout the same as my current R1200GS LC manages at much more sedate speeds (well I am getting on a bit now Laughing )

Looking at all the responses there certainly are a few factors to include in any decision to change bike. I'm not surprised that MPG didn't fall into many peoples choice of bike.

Most of these machines seem to run on passion, not just gas!

So in the end, I never got my tourer.
I have a hit list though and these are:

Triumph Sprint
Pan European
BMW 1200 GT

While I'm in the process of changing jobs, finances are looking a little thin. I ended up with a 3yr old NC700 which is being used purely for its 70MPG statistics (I have a 30 mile city commute) but other than that its actually not a bad bike.

Looking forward to buying the big one after Christmas.

Thanks for all your replies and safe riding.
