A few friends and I are planning on taking some 125's around England for a few days, maybe a week, I'll be using a ybr.

What would you use if you were limited to a legal learner bike to take a small tour, 3-400 miles a day for a week?

I'd go for an NSR125 - but if you're on a YBR and friend(s) are looking for a bike to join you, a similar bike will do as well, as they'll be a bit more limited by your pace.

Varadero 125 would also seem to 'make sense'.

They're 125s most sport 125s differences are cosmetic.
So it doesn't matter.
More important than which 125 is how are you carrying your luggage about.
I would suggest dry sacks and tank bags rather than panniers.

I do my touring on a 250 and I would be pushed to do that every day for a week Shocked
I will be very impressed if you can keep that pace up.
You`re on 125`s, maybe 150/200 miles a day?

Hat off to you for doing your tour on a 125 Thumbs Up , dont be put off, but be realistic.

300 miles a day = 5 hours riding at 60mph.

Should be easily achievable enough, especially if there's big chunks sitting on A roads etc.

If they ride a constant 60 for 5 hours. Add in hills. Breaks, stopping at lights, accelerating etc.. and that 5 hours will become 10 easily on a 125.

My 650 can cruise at 70-80 all day long, but it still takes me longer to places than my 900 or my 1000 did.

A 125 maxi-scoot would be a good choice, an S-Wing, Burgman 125 or Piaggio Xevo 125, they will have the same speed roughly, feet forward comfort, plenty of storage, wind and rain protection, automatic twist and go.

Varadero 125, as one of the biggest 125's out there.

And to add, 300-400 miles a day is too much, unless you're doing only motorway/DC/A road riding. I did over 800 miles over 2 days on my CB400 to Wales and back, day 1 was 440 miles, 165 miles of which was motorway so average speed of 70mph (allowing for some slower and some faster bits).

I left my house at just befoere 7am and had done the 165 miles of motorway by 9:45am. The other 270 miles took me until 6:45pm, that's 9 hours. And that was with about an hours worth of stops for food etc. That was on a 400cc bike and I wasn't riding slowly. That's 34mph average over 8 hours.

No way in hell, unless you're riding on arrow straight 60mph roads you'll average over 40mph on a 125 and not be half dead after day 2. Even if you manage 35mph average, 350 miles that's 10 hours of solid riding, without stops. Add in stops and you're looking at 12 hour days.

Trust me, after doing 800 miles over 2 days, anywhere near 400 miles in a day is too much. I was nearly dead by the time I got home, my arse was in tatters. 200-300 is much more manageable, especially if you actually want to stop and not be riding for 10 hours straight.

I second the Varadero, you'll welcome the extra space.

Got to agree 300-400 miles a day on a 125 does not sound much fun and more of a challenge. You would be better to pick better roads/places to visit and doing less miles.

300-400 miles a day even on a 1000 Varadero can be hard going depending on the roads.

The little Vara would be far better than the little race rep bikes. Friend of mine toured Ireland on a Baby Vara but kept the schedule to 200 miles a day with nice places to sleep at night.

If you keep the throttle pinned on a 125 you might average what 50mph? Less if there are hills, sounds like masochism. I averaged about 30mph cross country when I went long distance on 125s.

I too would say that 3-400 miles a day on a 125 is a lot.....i don't think I could do it.I have a ybr that I commute to work on and I have done a few 160 mile trips on it which was enough for me.
I admire you for taking on a trip like this on a small capacity bike, you may well be able to do it with a group of riders encouraging each other and it will be great fun to try.
Fair play to you and I wish you the best of luck on your adventure.

All the best,neil.

Depends if it's a slow 4 stroke or a decent 2 stroke.
A stock NSR125R with a svelte rider would max out at only maybe 4-6mph less than my KTM690 on the speedo

Max speed is not average speed.

The worst part of a really underpowered bike is difficulty overtaking. Getting past a dawdling numpty is much harder on a 125 than on a larger bike. This is very much the reason I'd like a more powerful bike. 535 is fast enough to tour on, but is not make the most assertive of overtakes, particularly 2-up with the big luggage on.

Max speed correlates to average speed pretty well if you know how to use a gear box.

Ok, the KTM has a smidge over twice the power of the NSR, but it also has massively worse aerodynamics to restrict go at higher speed and higher centre of gravity which slightly restricts it's possible acceleration..

Both can pull away reasonably promptly and can accelerate reasonably at legal speeds, hold pace up a hill and so on.

You can tour on anything. Given you are all on 125s, the similar power and speed should help.

I once toured on a Velosolex......

I did the BCF Ireland tour on a YZF R125. Including riding to and from the ferry I covered around 1,200 miles over 5 days. I would not recommend. Especially if you're carrying all your gear on your back. Laughing
