I am going to book a trackday on my vfr800 vtec and wondered if anyone has any preferences as to tyres that will be up to track riding?

its shod with Avons at the minute (cant remember which off hand) with plenty of life in them but was considering getting spare wheels with track day tyres fitted... any recommendations?

I use scrubs most of the time, so whatevers for sale when i'm looking always deals to be had. Can also try oponeo/tyreleader for any personal preference or just to get the best deal. Any of the main manufacturers sports tyre will see you into the fast group before you need to worry about proper trackday/race tyres

Spare set of wheels and a set of tyres is just a waste of money.

Your Avons should be up to the job for a trackday (what exactly are they?). Use them then get a new set fitted after if you need to.

I'd probably trust Avons a little more on track than on the road - at least there's no lamp posts to hit when they fail to offer grip.

Otherwise, good condition supercorsa or similar part worn tyres

Mind you. You can get a rear wheel pretty cheaply and they don't take long to change.

I've been impressed by the level of on-road grip in both wet and dry from the Metzeler M7RRs I put on my VFR750 recently.

Those are road tyres mind.

I take it you're in novice? You could ride on Avon Ditchfinders, BT45s or Chinglongdong Nylons. Don't worry about it, the pace will increase at a glacial rate, your current tyres will only be a problem if they're squared off.

First off, do try and increase pace slowly - those that get quicker rapidly (regardless of the bike/tyres) tend to be those that crash soon.
Those that improve speed steadily but slowly tend to get a lot quicker pace before they crash.

However... I was pushing the limits of my tyres on my first trackday.
Confirmed when I lent the bike to a friend who raced at the time for the last time "nice bike, but the tyres are shot" was his conclusion.
(They were race tyres, so still a reasonable bit of grip, but nowhere near what could have been.)
