The NSR finally landed tonight Very Happy Thumbs Up He'd actually managed to squeeze it into a Transit Connect Laughing

So, how it arrived

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1655_zpsdqg0kfme.jpg

Obvious priority is to get it washed off and see what's under the dust Thumbs Up

Notice the Cougar, she came home as I was in the process Shocked
"REALLY?"
"I told you about it! Anyway, flowers in the kitchen! Thumbs Up " Laughing

The wheels aren't really silver, they've actually been done in a kind of pearl white (along with several random other bits on the bike) but it doesn't really show in the pics.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1661_zpsvk1mmfva.jpg

Had to see what it looked like with the side panels on so they're just resting in place

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1663_zpsx5cmpznw.jpg

Getting it washed off is about as far as I got before I ran out of daylight and had to get on with other stuff.
As it's the bikes first night here and in an unfamiliar environment etc I'm letting it stay in the workshop until it's settled in Laughing

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1664_zpsgvp5qcds.jpg

Next job will be to get it running and basically go over the whole bike to see what it's going to need so I can get a list of parts together.

From what I've seen so far though, I'm very happy. There are very obvious things it will need such as new rubber, chain and sprockets, fork seals etc but the bike seems to be mostly complete Thumbs Up

Finally! Looks in pretty good nick bodywork wise. Can't wait to see what you do with this.

It does look not bad at all bodywork wise, and there's not really any visible corrosion anywhere either. My guess is that this was dry stored for a long time.

I think getting the fairing lowers fixed up/re sprayed in the Original colour scheme/ graphics would be good.

Then personally however much a smart looking VFR125 it looks, I would get the mechanicals all sorted out, and put new tyres and brakes on, and service the suspension.

It's in good enough condition for the OP to approach like the RS2 project, and lightly restore/re-finish where necessary to get it looking very presentable without a major re-build or full resto. In fact if it is as clean as it looks I would be looking to get it all fixed up and running well, and put a decent sticker price on it to flip it before you get too attached sentimental over it?

I can just see the potential for it to sell really well like the RS2 did, as few learners will be able to find a decent running clean 125 sporty 2stroke now for a 1st bike, and buying one off a person who is not a spotty can't afford to run it teenager, is worth spending a few quid more on IMO.

Could be a bit more profit for the Mito if your lucky?
In fact thinking about it, my logic would say forget the Mito for a few months more, and now the NSR is in the workshop, get it sorted and looking good to sell before Christmas.

Mito can wait a bit longer, I'm sure it won't get stroppy under that big tent shelter, and it gives you more time to hunt down bits and build a big bore engine full of awesomeness for it too! Wink

I'll throw up a thread on my KMX 200 engine, but I want to get my shed finished and made cosy for winter first. I'm very envious of your spotless clean workshop with room to work. My Garage was like that almost, but an old Rover doesn't want me in there as it's claiming it as home. Laughing

If I wanted to make a profit on it I'd have left the dust on it and sold it as a 'barn find', it'd have been worth thousands then! Laughing

Seriously though, I don't want to do up another bike just to sell on. It was nice making a tidy little profit on the RS2 but I didn't enjoy doing the work at all because I knew it was something I wasn't going to be keeping.
For me, doing the restoration work is almost as much fun as riding the finished bike, but it becomes very different doing it for 'profit' as it then turns from being a really enjoyable hobby into just a highly underpaid job. Laughing

That said, just how far I'll go with this one and exactly what I'll do with it is largely yet to be decided but I want to make it really nice and then own and experience it for a while rather than just selling it straight on. I'd also rather be able to sell it more as a restored classic to someone who'd appreciate rather than as a tidied learner bike for a teenager to kill. Less 'profit' but more feel good! Smile

So, no it won't be getting done before the Mito, that's coming in after weekend, I even got the new rubber for it today Thumbs Up

https://i62.tinypic.com/2w3rq6e.jpg

As for the current condition of the NSR, it is generally very very good from what I've seen so far and someone has obviously loved it. The bodywork is nowhere near as mint as it looks in the pictures and is quite tatty when you get up close and personal (though not bad at all for it's age) so it will certainly be a full respray and new graphics etc. I'll probably leave the wheels as they are as, even though it's not a colour I'd choose, they've not had too bad a job done on them and they'd be quite a bit of work to respray.

I very much doubt it will need anything like a full strip down as someone has already clearly put a lot of work into it respraying the frame and engine etc. I'll get much more detailed pics tomorrow once I have some time on it again, had a very long day today so not got the energy to do a thing with it tonight.

Shed tent also arrived today so I've really got my work cut out this weekend! Laughing

Will wait patiently for the KMX thread. Obviously I had to sacrifice the MR2 to get my workshop but 12 months down the line and I'm not regretting it. Once I own a minted Mito done just for me I'll be 100% happier about it again Thumbs Up

Sounds like a really good plan tbh!

Oh and those tyres look seriously sticky and capable. Mito needs full race everything to take those tyres and work them hard! Laughing

I really can see the point about not wanting to do a shit load of work on a bike again so soon, just to know your going to sell it on afterwards. I guess it defeats the object of buying a second or maybe third project bike, as like you say the fun goes out of it when your doing it for money or for someone else to enjoy.

If when the SP Corsa RR Mito is complete, then I think it will be nice knowing you have a nice and in some ways easy std resto to do with a very clean and complete NSR for a future project.

It would also make much sense to keep the NSR once it's made really nice again, just as a 125cc investment, as I think all the liquid cooled 2stroke 125's after 82 are now the next big thing to go crazy in interest and eventually pricing, like the FS1E fast 50 craze and the pre 82 fast 2stroke 250cc learner bikes did.

I just cannot get rid of the Rover, but life would be easy space wise if I did. The problem with me as you know is that I would be hunting down an unsuitable daily driver Japanese replacement within weeks and that would then get me all side tracked. I've spent ages lately reading on an MX5 forum about an ex Rover tomcat owner I know that's just built a 4litre 270bhp MX5 V8, with muchos potential left in it, and an exhaust note that makes you hard. Laughing No selling the car and getting a hand full of cash would be a very bad idea for me and my Ebay finger's would be twitching instantly too!

Shed is nearly done, but I have O/T and holidays most of this month. I need to put some basic power and a heater in there for winter, and then try to get into garage to move some old broken KMX junk in there to accessorize it with.

I don't think my best 200cc engine build will be done until late this year, as I've still got all the mods to fit on the 125, and it needs 3lots of dyno runs to get back to back figures to see how much time and money I'm wasting on it.

I'd love to document the 125 tuning on a separate thread like Iain did with his 75mph Chinqy scooter, but I don't think I could make a very good readable job of it, and who want's to see a fool sticking expensive shiny bits on an old 125, unless they are having serious sleeping trouble?

The project I'm most looking forward to though is KMX200 off road slag build. For this one I want to remove as much stuff as possible from the other KMX and just leave some lights on it and make it MOT able. It will be nice to have a std KMX200 engine running in that bike again too, just to take me back to how my first one felt all those years ago.

Would be very happy to swap it for a fixable KX500 with a few box's of classy biscuits their way though! Thumbs Up Laughing

Yeah, thinking about it... it's probably best you just hang on to the Rover Laughing

Get a thread going for the KMX! I really am intrigued... and need pics! Very Happy

As for KX500.... if one comes up for the right money you're going to have to beat me to it Laughing

Plan for the NSR this afternoon was to go though the basics of checking through the ignition and fuel delivery. I've never owned one of these bikes and know little about them really so I'm largely going to be feeling my way around.

So, first job is off with seat

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1667_zpsienvkytm.jpg

Oh, nice fuse Clapping

I know the battery is going to be completely goosed but I test it anyway

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1668_zpsi0zz9fyv.jpg

Not even a volt Laughing That's for the bin.

Side panels were to come off next, only a few thousand bolts holding them on but I eventually found them all Neutral

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1669_zpskiekd8qv.jpg

Check the air filter while I'm here

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1670_zpssoya92lf.jpg

Not as bad as I was expecting but cleaned and oiled then refitted.

Tank off next

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1671_zpskprbice0.jpg

WTF? How are you meant to get to anything? This bike is odd Laughing

Tank is weeping fuel from those crusty threads

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1673_zpseniwntll.jpg

Tap is coming off anyway as I want to drain and flush the tank.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1675_zpszyeqhw9f.jpg

There was quite a bit of crap in the tank... but I've seen worse

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1674_zpsubahprsw.jpg

Filter and tap stripped and cleaned

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1676_zpslcv4gtzq.jpg

The nut has some nasty corrosion on the threads

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1677_zps4mv6tseh.jpg

So I just let that pickle in some acid for a minute

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1679_zpsfc5cmeur.jpg

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1680_zps2su4rxl5.jpg

Cleaned up the threads on the tank and wrapped a little ptfe on

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1678_zpsxrswma5f.jpg

Then all built back up and fuel added.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1689_zpsm3nhdylu.jpg

Sorted, no more leak Thumbs Up

Want to get the carb' off next... it's crammed in down there

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1672_zpsupbp38vg.jpg

After some swearing, it was out

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1682_zpsgo2qk3ui.jpg

Check the state of the strainer first

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1683_zpsujz82y7s.jpg

It appears to be missing Laughing

Float bowl off

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1684_zpsajrf1qp0.jpg

Not looking all too bad really but stripped and cleaned

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1685_zps3zom9jse.jpg

Then back together

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1686_zpsem2poyfo.jpg

While I've got relatively easy access to the coil I want to pull that out and test it

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1687_zpshq9difqd.jpg

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1688_zpstwcdyyek.jpg

I'll go order a coil then Laughing

Steve's KMX is absolutely gorgeous, I don't know why he doesn't show it off more often. It's pretending to be a supermoto, so that brings it down a bit. Wink

I don't know how you can be bothered to keep working on the project bikes. I have had a flat tyre on my CRM for 5 weeks, its just a case of getting the wheel off, getting one of my spare tubes and bringing it in to work to use the tyre machine, I can't be bothered. I think the hardest bit is ordering parts, mainly because I don't have any form of payment, I deal with cash, so I have to constantly get other people to order things for me online and then pay them back, I really need to get to the bank and do something about this, the issue is, the government will be able to keep track of what I'm buying then and then can begin building a profile about me, it's why I don't want a nectar card, the government will know what we're buying and adjust the prices accordingly. It's up to you to decide if I'm serious. Laughing

It's why I have strung the head bearings out on the pit bike for 5 days now and I haven't touched the Mito. The GPZ is sold, I may have a little cry, I'm going to drop it off at my mates house, the one I bought the Mito from, at some point in the week.

Does it still have the standard pipe? Shocked

Keep that, it must be worth more with standard stuff.

Must admit I'm not keen on using electronic payments myself, I don't own a credit card and only use cash in the real world. Would be lost without my paypal account for ordering stuff online though... would also be a lot better off too though! Laughing

I wish you'd just hurry up with that pit bike, I really want to see the MT5 project! Twisted Evil

Yep it's still the standard pipe on the NSR, looks like it's good for another 100 years or so yet too Laughing

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1690_zps4jnadtse.jpg

Don't know what they made them from but it's seriously substantial, I bet it weighs a tonne!

The can is badly scuffed which is a bit of a shame but I'll sort something with it, maybe a sheet metal place could wrap a new stainless sleeve on it? I dunno, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1691_zpsgpgyzlzn.jpg

As far as I'm aware everything on the bike is standard (apart from paint) and it will be staying that way. I'll most likely redo it in the original paint scheme too Thumbs Up

No it wasn't over £500, it was £470 delivered Laughing

I could probably get mine tidied and respectable for very little time and money... but that would be boring Very Happy I'm also very OCD and have a need for things to be mint

Looks like you've got quite a project there but still a good start Thumbs Up
It's not as bad as the RS1 was when I first got it and at least yours is worth doing Laughing

From what I've seen so far, parts are quite plentiful and cheap for these (comparative to the Mito and Riejus at least) so that's a big bonus!

Would be interested to see what you do with yours Thumbs Up

It's almost like the dream project bike. Laughing

Clean to start with, complete, no rust, no crash damage and everything is there. It's just dry stored time warp stuff and a duster is taking care of most of it too.

All the dirt and dust is on the insides which is how you want it. Bodywork looks quick to prep for paint and decals too. Thumbs Up

Reminds me of the first Rover 220 turbo I had, (also in white) and a garage find too.

As for the KMX, ok well after my night shifts are done, I'll book in at the dyno for a base line run, and put the graph up on a boring 125cc tuning thread. Laughing

Like James, now I'm getting the 200cc motor parts back from full race tune innit, I'm feeling side tracked and want to build up the fast big big block engine already, havn't even put the shiny bits on the 125 yet, so I need to stop and breathe.

have nowhere to work on an engine yet, though I could bring it into my flat for a cosy re-build in the Kitchen, next to the stereo and fridge of beer? Idea Laughing

Oh and you can get to the back of the KX500 queue and behave, I've not had one yet, and have been so close I could touch it, so my needs for the next cheap KX open classer commuter are greater than yours! Middle Finger Laughing

All my O/T has been supposedly for a couple of bills and to buy one of the last few big bits of the Rover re-vamp essentials Omex Ecu and trick roller bearing blower Wink

I best get another account for it then, or else come payday the Ebay fingers could be twitching?? Smile

Oh yeah and now I know just how much Adam likes ghey looking pretenter road bike tyres on a dirt bike, I'll be showing pics everywhere just to make his day! Laughing

Can I join the Petition to get rid of the Pit bike and start MonsTer5 awesome build! I want inspiration too!

Yeah I think I've made a pretty good purchase with this one, it is going to be an easy project Thumbs Up

Bodywork only has one small crack in a side panel to repair but other than that it just needs prepping for paint, it almost feels like cheating Laughing

I know what you mean about stopping to breathe, I walked into the workshop tonight to see the NSR in bits and the RS1 sat there waiting for its top end transplant... and I'm trying to put my mind to the Mito build!
I'm having a break from the bikes tonight Laughing

I honestly don't know what I'd do if a KX500 came up for sale tomorrow, I'd certainly be facing a bit of a head / heart dilemma Confused
Had a little bit of one today when I got this message

Quote:
Hi James, you sent me an offer for my Dr 600, are you still interested I have a feeling the guy who won it will mess me about

Shocked

I'd sent a cheeky offer a couple of weeks ago before I'd bought the NSR, would be a great project and also satisfy my itch for something I can do some green laning on. Head won very quickly though, no way I can squeeze another bike in so it would mean putting NSR or RS1 up for quick sale and don't want to part with either so I've had to decline Neutral

Anyway, KMX pics!! Very Happy

Little update on this.

Have had very little time to spend on it over the past week but the new coil turned up last Thursday.
So I fitted that along with new cap and borrowed the battery from the RS1 to see how the spark was looking.
It was weak and intermittent Mad
New coil is brand new but test it to be sure and it's fine. I can't stand electrical faults and was really confident the new coil would sort it! Crying or Very sad

Checked stator and pickup and everything looks fine, checked and cleaned all connections to cdi etc but all seemed good already and wiring loom is generally in really good original condition with no obvious bodgery anywhere (rare thing!).

So things are pointing to cdi Sad

Pulled that off tonight so I can start looking out for a used one at a reasonable price to try. While it was out I noticed it's got a split in it and a slight bulge under the split Confused

Could be somethings gone internally and caused the split? Or split allowed moisture in? Could be nothing to do with anything! I've no idea but I'm now strongly suspecting cdi as the culprit.
Not something I've ever tried but have heard of these being put in an oven for 10 mins to get them red hot and remove any moisture in them.

Figure I've nothing to lose but don't like the idea of putting it in the oven so gave it a 10 minute session with the heat gun, it got hot!!! Twisted Evil

After it cooled I went and gave it a try and... I've got a really good blue spark Shocked

Got excited and figure it's now time to see if this thing will start.... and it did Very Happy

It's alive!! Very happy days! Very Happy Thumbs Up

I don't know how permanent a fix that is with the cdi but I don't trust it. It would be a pain to strip everything off to get to it again if it fails in the future so I'll just keep my eye out for a decent used one to replace it with. Main thing is I know that was the problem so the nightmare is over Laughing

CDI problems eh! I've got one of those myself with the KMX, but it's a lack of information problem that can only be cured by serious spending by the looks of it? Neutral Laughing

I've just bagged one for £30 posted Thumbs Up

Wasn't in a rush for one but it's at the right price and I may as well get it fitted now while the bikes stripped. Should be here in next couple of days so can get that fitted then build the bike back up and put it to one side for now Thumbs Up

V5c has just come today Thumbs Up

Only 3 previous owners Shocked I think my Mito has 17 Laughing

Model is an NSR 125FM Confused

Don't know what the FM is and can't seem to find much info' on it but it's obviously an import (Italian?) as 'was registered/used overseas declared manufactured 1993'.

Looks like it's quite a rare bike in the UK. Anyone know anything about these?

Not had much time for the bikes lately but replacement CDI arrived on Monday.

Fitted that and gave it a try and it's a goodun, now running spot on Thumbs Up

Also sent the '50s their fuse back and fitted something a little more suitable

I've got fairing panels and bike bits all over the place at the moment so built back up for now to make some room

That will mostly be it for this one at the moment... and it will be spending its winter in the garden Sad

Well, after a seriously wet winter and consequently getting massively behind with work.... I'm considering flipping this as is Sad

Haven't touched any of the bikes for months and they've been right at the back of my mind. Haven't even made a start on the Mito yet and that's been sat in the garden for over 12 months now without me doing a thing to it.

I'd planned on being well into the Mito project by now and it will probably be a few more weeks yet before I make a start on it so thinking it's just going to be too long before I can put any time into this... so it may be better going to a new home, regrettably Sad

Gauging any interest here before I put it up for sale on Ebay etc

Will pull it out sometime in the next couple of days and properly go over it to see what it will need for MOT etc and get some detailed pics but it's basically exactly how it was... runs mint and is complete but 'needs' (depending how fussy you are) cosmetic tidying on the fairings and will want new rubber, battery and attention to front brake (suspect M/C seals but not investigated).
