HI All

I have an occasional need for a bike that will cover 150+ miles on roads reasonably comfortably then tackle some green-laning type of stuff at the end. I can't justify the cost of a 'proper' dual sport bike and in any case I think they might be too heavy. I was wondering though if you could take a boggo commuter like an ER5 at fit a longer travel set of forks (KL250 ?) high mudgaurds and dual sport tyres.
This could be cheaper alternative, light enough and a bit of fun in the process. Any thoughts about this ?

Cheers

J

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Embarassed yeah pretty much exactly that. I didn't know it existed and it's a bit fancier than I envisaged but that could be the one !

Laughing

They are very heavy though. 180KG+ I think. I had one for a year. They are ok as long as you don't expect too much from it.

Yeah 'tis a bit on the lardy side maybe but we're talking rough stone/gravel tracks rather than mud-plugging so hopefully ok. Maybe some options to shed weight too ?

Cheers

Not really no. It can do light stuff no bother, as can any bike really. They are generally cheap and go forever, a work horse of a bike really. Engine was pokey enough, 6 speed is nice, does about 115 or so, gets there fine. Just terrible in the twisties and the front brake is notoriously bad. Bad enough to put you off even trying to go quickly. Tried a braided line on mine, made little difference. Should have had a better calliper on really, or twin discs, but it's a cheap bike not a BMW GS.

you can stick enduro or full on off road tyres on anything if you want, so long as you stay within the limits of the suspension and ground clearance of the standard chassis you can offroad just fine, I have enduro tyres on my cb350 and take it on green lanes.... hit a big hole hard at speed and the forks bottom out but if your sensible its ok!

Hi Folks

Back on this again and part way through shamelessly copying the bike above.. I have a cheap GS and also the front end off a DR650 (pre95). I have also swapped the stem from the GS into the DR bottom yoke so fitting the new front end should be OK..

Next hurdle however are the steering stops. For some reason on the (aluminium) DR yoke they are not symmetrical wrt the clamps (as they are on teh GS) so something has to change. Options are:-

a) grind off DR stop stubs off the yoke and drill and tap the yoke to fit some bolts to act as stops

b) grind off the GS500 headstock stop tab and move it to a different postion to accommodate the DR existing stubs.

I would prefer to do a) (mailnly cos my welding is cr@p but have some concerns about weakening the yoke - although the holes would not be near any of the strength webs..

Thoughts ?

Cheers

Ive seen both the yoke modified with new bolts as the lockstops, and the frame with a new tab welded on.... personally id go with modifying the frame as if welded properly it will be a good deal stronger than a modded yoke and also neater. Ive also seen the frame drilled and tapped to bolt on a new tab, not as good as welding but i think its better than trying to drill and tap a cast alloy yoke, I'd be worried about weakening it too, cast alloy can be quite brittle. It might work fine for an mot but if it takes a whack in a fall it might not be so fine!
