You need to clean the valves off before you lap them.... The method is use is:

Lightly tighten the valve into a pillar drill, or normal drill on low speed if you don't have one.

Use heavy scotchbrite and a little duck oil to clean the shaft up lightly, and the back and face of the valve so that all the crud and crap has come off. Mine usually come up near silver. Avoid going too heavy on the stem....

Then, once cleaned you can lap them in........ There's no point lapping any until you've cleaned them up. That way you can check for damage ect under the crap.

Shame and odd that what looks like such a good motor inside with no real wear, has two horrible rusty sludge covered valves and carb bowls.

Glad you stripped it though, as its nice to see how nicely engineered the Blade engine really is inside and why it's always had a reputation for being a tough bastard and hard to kill.

Yeah it you right its still a young engine. It has been great to work on learned a lot and i'm confident I will have it running in the next few weeks. Still awaiting on athena gaskets!

Also going to order new gaskets for the bowls after seeing all that crap in there.

This is through Wemoto and athena.

Clutch in, Alternator in but need extra hand torquing that puppy up to 130 without it moving, but its ready to be sealed.
bottom end sealed. Cleaned the frame mainly round engine bay etc.

Header still needs valves seating more, after I tested if they leaked.

Engine turns over manually just fine happy days.

Today I've put the engine back in sealed it up, reconnected all electrical cables, cleaned and sprayed radiator, connected all the cooling system, connected the carbs partly, will need to balance first, and mocked up the air box to see if all has been accounted for.

The last 2 days have been kind. Cool

however if you look at the image below, I've not seen the carbs fully connected and getting confused with this air line I assume it just sits down like in the image?

https://www.shaunboundy.co.uk/project/10thmay/20160510_193731.jpg

Also any tips on getting crap bits from a fuel tank?

Very impressive rebuild. Must say, if I buy a non genuine gasket set I always lob the headgasket and get a genuine one. Learnt my lesson enough times with that one...

Well its all ready to fire.

I just tired to do it and it almost went! but fuel is leaking out of a pipe at the carbs so gonna buy some jubilee clips. Also some weirdness with the gears its in neutral but still engaged. I hope I've not fucked that up Shocked

I'll record a video next time.

Check you've not accidentally put it into gp style shift. Accidentally did it on my gsxr, and wondered why I couldn't pull off (in 6th). You might be in 5th; not neutral.

Good luck with the fire up after all that work!

I do love that compact well thought out motor. Its nice to see one piece cam bearing ladder caps on each cam too. Much nicer engineering than separate cam bearing caps, and second only to a one piece upper cam carrier for both cams.
