I hope the silver paint holds up well and is temp rated high enough not to burn/flake off. Seeing as you've cleaned it up and painted the front section silver, it'll probably be an easy and regular job to keep on top of it and touch it up every so often. You'd get away with spraying it on the bike too I reckon with so careful masking. Saying that brush on pain for touching up is preferred really.

The header pipe with the 180degree bend is always the worst bit on any off road bike to keep from rusting.

I've been tempted to try having my Fresco KMX pipe ceramic coated, as it's supposed to be tough and is cheaper than plating a pipe too.

Well that was the plan until Knacker showed up with his stainless bling pipe on his DTRE. I've joined in and am waiting for a one off custom stainless pipe now. Razz

ideally ceramic coating is the road id like to go down but theres nowhere near bristol that does it... the can says the paint will withstand upto 650degrees celcius so id hope it'll be alright. That said, when i turn on the engine, the paint will un harden and will come off on my finger if i touch it. Then it hardens again when the engine cools down Confused I only painted the pipe today though, id guess/hope it just isnt cured yet.

Ive used engine paint on a few other projects before like the casing i did on one of my 80s boomboxes, i find its good paint to use sometimes because its hardwearing and it can be applied thinly without primer

My CRM pipe was like that, I spent hours with a wire brush, then some wire wool and then some autosol cleaning it, so much so my arm was hurting for a couple of days afterwards, it then rusted up with a couple of weeks again, I never thought of spraying the rust silver, because you wouldn't be able to see the shine that well anyway curled away down there, but the rust sticks out like a sore thumb. Embarassed

Steve, that fresco pipe must be worth something now, I believe they're no longer a company aren't they? When are we going to see your KMX on the dyno, anyway?

There's a guy in Newport, South Wales (so about 35 mins from you) that does ceramic and powder coating. Had loads done by him and it's always an amazing job. search for blastcoat

Looks good, I would love to have the whole exhaust done in a dark satin colour, but wales is still too far out Sad without my bike i have no way of getting there and i cant see anyone i know giving me a lift to Wales unfortunately Thumbs Down ideally i need a sprayer whos bristol based and if they could collect then that would be a bonus.

I looked into a re-chrome as well, but thats a no go. I contacted a place out in yate but it would of taken 8 weeks with a price of £190, which as nice as their chromimg work looks is totally pointless when i can get a brand new DEP pipe in two days for £185

Im gonna have another go at painting the pipe myself before i decide anything else, so im waiting on some higher temp paint to arrive but im gonna try do it better this time using VHT primer & lacquer and curing in between coats

18/03/16:

I repainted the old exhaust pipe again using VHT flameproof paint this time, but doing it properly with primer and curing in between coats. The paint apparently withstands temperatures of upto 1100 degrees (centegrade) but it lasted a matter of days before it started to bubble up and flake off the header Rolling Eyes

The paint on the silencer held up though due to the lack of heat towards the rear, but i gave up on the front pipe and spent £185+p&p on a shiny new DEP one!

ive pulled some more bits off the bike recently for tidying up...
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_7140_zpsbszdvnuu.jpg

i had the sprocket guard powdercoated gloss black
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_1710_zpsizumg0bf.jpg

and the RC cover as well, B&A
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_7127_zpsgxj0kmin.jpg

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_4008_zpsp1f3jnju.jpg
I actually anodised both parts red to start with but both were uncussessful.

the oil cap thingy was starting to rust so i had that done as well
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_4014_zpstobhkpzj.jpg

the brake and gear pedals were starting to look worse for wear, they were raw uncoated steel so i painted them a while ago with chrome spray paint. it done the job for a bit, but wasnt really sufficient. the gear lever also had to be hammered back into shape
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_7148_zpsrlgncr3h.jpg

gloss black again Cool
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_1626_zpsgohz1ba3.jpg

the generator cover looked OK, ish from a distance but it was starting to discolour like a 20 year old SNES Thumbs Down
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_3833_zpsza4auh3j.jpg

some sanding and a few coats of plastic primer/satin black later...
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_1680_zpses6kjxxp.jpg

i also bought some stainless rear wheel cams as mine are starting to flake and rust again. these are for an original honda africa twin but i see no reason why they shouldnt fit
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_1756_zpsvqfbfuta.jpg

new sump and exhaust protectors

fitted the guard and bolted the pipe to the bike. its improved the sound giving it a much clearer 'pinger' note, i guess all the carbon build up inside the old pipe was muffling that 2stroke noise.. not to mention how it looked old

The wheels were the last part of the bike i wanted to change, and they turned out to be a long process so they got left until last. the red wheels looked ok in the pictures but they had started to fade, the rear being worse than the front, and the spokes were a mess. After looking at the bike in person you would say the wheels let the bike down.

i went with fizzer thou's idea of having the rims powdercoated and had them shot blasted and powdercoated gloss black by the same guy who did my rear sub frame.

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_4302_zpstrpa5txa.jpg

the spoke wraps i bought months ago were used because they could be slid onto the ends of the spokes
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/91_zpsfhj6lwcs.jpg

the wheels had new silver nipples fitted because the red ones were faded almost pink and several were rounded off... I laced the wheels up myself and paid somebody to true them for me
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/92_zps9etwzdn5.jpg

ive wanted to change the gold sprocket ever since i bought this bike. as part of a red colour scheme it looked shit
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/93_zps5hybss1w.jpg

I dropped 2 teeth off the rear, to make it better for the road. it should take some of the snappiness out of the acceleration and lengthen the first 2 gears
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/94_zpsbpa6so1g.jpg

And Its finished! Very Happy ....will have to get out and take some better pictures soon, but it looks as good as i could of hoped, the wheels make the bike look much cleaner and newer
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/95_zpsmeq4rivw.jpg

thanks to RPA/ Bristol Motorcycle Powdercoating, Charlie's bikes, and GB Motocross for their work Thumbs Up

It looks really good tbh, a nice summer town and country roads bike!

The pic however is a terrible shot as the background means I barely noticed there was a CRM250 there at all! Laughing

Thanks....

@stevo: it wasn't intentional for that mexico to be in the background but it is a thing of beauty and it does steal the limelight away from the CRM i must admit Shocked

Cr was a whole different beast. Different engine, much snappier with a shorter power band, much higher maintenance

Crm250.com should have a few topics on this

Wondering which would be better for the lols - mainly road use. Probably this, but I like to go to extremes and the CR250 looks to be a bit more extreme.

That and CR500's are a little pricey these days.

Don't quote me on this but:

The 1990-2001 CR250 engines are all the same basic design, and should swap out between chassis. They are a cylinder reed valve engine unlike the case reed engine of the CRM. So they are totally different. Also pre 2002 motors have more power supposedly.

They designed a new case reed engine with an electronic actuated RC valve type pv for 2002. I believe that it's this cylinder that can be fitted to a CRM too, despite the CRM being a much older design.

The 2002 was seen as a step backwards and didn't perform as well as the cylinder reed valve mechanically operated 2001 motor.
