I'm nearly 16 and want to buy a 50cc I don't want a scooter I want a geared bike and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what bike to buy.Ive been looking at rieju rs3 50cc but the only trouble is that the handle bars seem too low for me is there any way of raising them!

When I were a lad, only mods and losers rode scooters and step thru's ... everyone else rode a proper 50cc moped that was "motorbike shaped"

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

These days it seems to be a Rieju or a scooter. No one else makes a proper moped, just two wheeled bouncy engined hairdryers.

Hell, in my eyes even that Yamasaki 50 sports plugged by Tritey looked better than a scooter.

My daughter is wanting a bike when she's 16 and she doesn't want a scooter either, so if you find something, let me know!

The trouble is the power/speed restrictions of 50cc mopeds make scooters a much more sensible option. You will spend all your time surfing the gearbox and getting nowhere. At least when I was a kid you had fragile Gileras and Garellis that could go a decent speed to cut your teeth on.

My advice, which you won't like is to get a twist and go (Gilera DNA if you want it to look bikeish) and ride for a year. Then sell and get a decent 125 motorcycle.

Enjoy, which ever road you decide to go down.

It's only for a year. Get a scooter and concentrate on learning to ride safely rather than worrying about what you look like.

Lesson 1.
Almost no-one will notice you on the road.

Lesson2.
Those who do notice you will completely ignore you.

Never seen one of those before!

The Derbi/Cagiva sports 'peds were great, not exactly loads about though...a 50cc bike will be a labour of love, but if you love bikes and don't want to wait why the hell not. It'll have to be a smoker though obviously...
