So this happened at knockhill, a rider on an old ducati suffers a catastrophic failure, rear wheel bearing collapsed and locked the wheel which resulted in a crash that took out several riders

https://youtu.be/WZ6BjyDcM48

Multi angle

https://youtu.be/pZgFP8lKTG8

No serious injuries thankfully, just a lot of broken bikes.

Although the idiot at the end running out onto a live track needs his balls booted for such stupidity

So, what's next? Is he going to pay for what he caused or is it all just tough luck?

This is a very good question. Do the rules of the road apply in that the riders behind him should have left an adequate gap as a stopping distance?!

I know that tracks have their own rules and that it is private land etc, but I'm curious as to if there are rules or etiquette that should be followed ?!

Not at all.

Riders have no comeback against anyone unless the trackday organiser has been negligent.

Not checking wheel bearings could be seen as negligent.

Anything can happen on track at any time I guess it's the risk you take by agreeing to take your bike onto the track.

As Ste says, they do not and can not apply. When you're on the track, you are on a private road where the laws concerning the traffic rules just do not apply. Also, and I'm not 100% sure about the UK, but the inssurance you have on your road legal motorcycle also does NOT cover the track riding. Unless you have a specific ''on track use'' inssurance, of course. Thumbs Up

I was asking generaly, if the riders involved asked the culprit to cover their damages.

That is an interesting point. If entry to the circuit is based on some sort approval of any track official, that the vehicle in question is eligible, and this official was negligent, it should be fault of this official.

Not on any insurance policy I've ever had, unless you specifically ask for it. Which I did once on my Evo 8, and it was eye wateringly, ball crushingly expensive.

That'll be why they don't check wheel bearings. Wink

Yeah, the guy defo should have taken his bearings out pre-race and put them through an x-ray/MIR scanner before racing.
