I have been running a i5 machine dunno which i5 but it was ok, for ages. Thought it was pretty fast.

Got offered an i7 (3770), with 32gig of ram, for nowt so seemed stupid to say no

Threw in a 500gb ssd an the thing flies Cool

It has built in graphics m guessing intel based (with the cpu?) but my question is, i have an old nvidia GT card that is quite old. woudl it be better to stick with the onboard stuff considering there is shit loads of ram

or stick the old card in?

i suppose i need to know which spec either of them are really...

Firstly, download CPU-Z. It gives you all the information you need to know about all your hardware.

https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

If you're not sure which one to get, this is the one: https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/cpu-z_1.77-en.exe

Secondly, what is the exact card you have? I suspect if it's ancient, it might be pointless putting it in the system.

What do you want to do with it?

If you're just using it for desktop purposes then it'll be pointless. If you're wanting to do some more intensive graphic design type work, or anything gaming wise, then yes you'll be wanting a graphics card.

Ancient is vague, 5 years is pretty ancient in technological terms. Depending on what you want to do you can buy a brand new latest gen GPU for not a huge amount over £100.

Toms GPU hierarchy

it will allow you to compare the two GPU is a quick and dirty fashion.

The NVIDIA GT is probably too old. Spend £100 on something more modern.

Cheers all

To be honest i don't really do anything that will require anything good. The only game i play is War-thunder which would probably run on a ipad.

But i will check what the card is when i get home

cheers all Thumbs Up

I was kinda hoping i could play battlefield 1 but that looks like it needs a beast of a machine....

Just grab an nvidia 1080 and it'll run. That PC is decent enough specs, could be dogshit RAM though... Laughing

Card is a GTX 550 Ti

On board gfx are Intel HD 4000

Looks to me like the card is marginally better-er?

At the moment the only game i play is Warthunder. But this has been down to my last machine being pants

Really for not a lot of cash you can get yourself a decent spec card, you need to decide what you want to spend really, but for a shade over £100 I'd be tempted by a new 1050.

I was pretty much in the same boat for a GPU, ending up buying a 2nd hand Sapphire Radeon R9 280 for £65 delivered off eBay. Plays DOOM incredibly well, 3 gig ram on board, standard clocks as I've not overclocked it. The R9 280's are re branded 7950's, either is a good choice.
