Good bike for the roads?
How open, wide and long and smooth exactly are those Highland roads? I presume it's nothing like North Wales crumbling rock, loose gravel, sheep and shit and a terrible surface then?

In Wales even a mere 150bhp early R1 is a terrible terrible wasted bike with no suitability for the conditions or potential for big throttle openings, high Revs, or high gears. I can't imagine a 1290cc mental naked being much better? Laughing

Then again these days I'm firmly into the whole thing of wanting only bikes that I can scream out in top gear and never see 100mph. I can't see the fun in riding anything else now? So much so I'm considering new 125's and not just big 250-450cc beasts for a silly purchase.

Are you kidding? Wales has some of the best fast biking roads I've ever been on, comparable to some of the best Europe has to offer. Go tinker with your 125 Laughing

Well if loose gravel, directionless random moving sheep, horse's and cows and rabbits, and a blanket of shit over everything vaguely tarmac with the odd random boulder strewn across the surface is the best they have to offer then I'm not going there either! Laughing

There's no sheep or shit or boulders in my shed though!

You definitely need to get out more - your picture of the world outside that shed is sadly lacking Wink

Just to take my favourite example, when was the last time you rode from Crossgates to Newtown? You'll want more than a chavvy tuned 125 for that one, for starters Laughing

Scotland is a real mix of road surfaces. Just depends where you go and how far into the sicks too.
If you ever get the time, Go over the Corran Ferry and head along to Strontian. Follow the A861 to Salen and turn off onto the B8007 - the route is a single track road which goes for a long way to the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse - some 35 miles of some of the most challenging road with stunning views you'll find. (loadsa camp sites and hotels if going)

Sure you have the major routes through Glencoe but away from the crowds is where I prefer.

That's what I like about Scotland and Wales; the mix. A perfect day's riding for me includes some good hooning roads and some gnarly mountain roads with decent scenery. A good cafe stop doesn't go amiss either.

When i first moved up i went from a CBR600FY to a Kawasaki ZX10R (wanted an out and out race bike before i got too old) and the bike was great for heading south on the main roads but single track roads i had one too many moments on the 10 on single track roads to put me off and get a 990SM.

I kept the 990SM for ages, 8 years as it ticked all the boxes for me, very light and flickable and was a joy on tight twisty roads. The 990SM you would ragging it to get to 140 and you could just chuck it into the bends, at top end it started to float a bit but it was never about top end.

I only changed as i went off biking for a bit and though something a little different might bring it back. So far its good, a lot of power but I'm not one for stupid top end i will sit cruising until i get to twisty / sweeping bends.

The big thing for me is it might be 1300cc but its Vtwin so your working the engine which feels much more satisfying than my 2000 R1 did, the R1 was a rocket but i much prefer the twins. I still have the R1, did a trackway on the 990sm and bought a R1 thinking i would use that but never got the time to go back down.
