Carrying extra fuel - what are your preferred solutions?

My bike (klx250) has a pretty decent range for a trail bike - being a gutless, flat 20bhp 4t 250 single with EFI, it takes delicate sips rather than swigs. So I can eke out erm probably just about 100 miles per tank, if grannied. But my mate's bike isn't as good - and there are some rides where petrol stations are a bit few and far between. In the past 10-15 years loads have closed around here - they're nearly dying faster than pubs.

So if you have to carry extra petrol, how'd you do it - what kind of containers, and how best to transport it when on bike.

I took an angle grinder to my petrol tank, cut the bottom out of it and added a gallon of capacity.

Depending what bike it is, fitting a larger capacity tank might be an option: https://acerbisb2b.co.uk/index.php/hard-parts/acerbis-fuel-tanks.html

A Rotopax is quite popular with the overlanding set and the GS luggage fetishists.. They are designed to be fixed to a flat surface. I wouldn't have a fuel bottle inside a bag because the bag will stink and you won't want to put anything else in it.

They come in a very wide range of sizes. https://rotopax.com/

At the Taffy Dakar/ Drwg whatever , a lot of guys seem to lash a 5litre red petrol can onto the rack with a bungee. No one has died in an inferno yet.

My backside gives up at 100 miles anyway but I've seen me lash a common 5L container to the rear rack.
There are lots of options for varying sizes - chuck a search into eBay.

I've got a 2l plastic can that looks like an old school Jerry can. Got from demon tweeks ( a few years ago) I think. It's enough to sit in rucksack with an inner tube and other bits to keep me happy when I may have mileage issues.

THis is what i did - bungeed it to the back (no rack but bungee points, 2 per side on klx's subframe). worked fine.

One option, but have to play with lights to work with it:
https://www.mx1canada.com/acerbis-front-auxiliary-fuel-tank.html
Something like this can be attached elsewhere reasonably easily:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/YOUNGFLY-Gasoline-Container-Universal-Emergency/dp/B07PFTFKXG/

I've got some square flat 5l jerry cans I've used on the KTM690 before I got a 'proper' second tank - but can't obviously find any now.

I agree with you mate. This must be the most viable option. Thumbs Up

Skudd 'I have a GS Adventure.'

We're talking about off road, not venturing up a gravel driveway to Aunt Millie's pile!

You're more than welcome to come and have a ride along Garton Balk with me - I'd pay reasonably good money to watch that.
