2016 cbr500r stolen/recovered locks

Hi, my CBR500R (2016) was stolen today, but already recovered by police.
I can't pick it up till Monday but wondering if worth repairing?
All I know so far is the steering lock was snapped and the ignition barrel ripped out.
If insurance class it as a write off for that, is it worth me having it back as a cat N and repairing myself + pay recovery and storage fees for myself, or just let them write it off and get the payout minus the excess? My excess being £450.

I'd have a look at it first off. See if they actually got it running and thrashed/crashed it about. Also recovery isn't always done very sympathetically.

If they broke the steering lock, check the bars for straightness, check for damage to the steering stem and check they didn't damage the steering stops on the frame and bottom yoke.

If it has the H.I.S.S. system (not all small engined Hondas do BTW) I'd forget trying to DIY it. You'd either need a dealer or a hacker to marry up the replacement ignition system to the ECU.

Not necessarily that big a job. New keys aren't difficult to program as long as you have one that's already coded to it, lots of how-tos out there. The ignition bit itself is just an antenna to detect the chip in the key (which you can hold next to it and use the new key to turn the lock). I've done it to code spare keys to Mrs stinkwheels CBR, it needed two bits of wire, two spade terminals, two croc clips and a resistor. The longest part of the job was taking the side panel off to get at the terminal block you need to jump into.

Or alternatively, with a bit of imagination, you can swap the old chip into the new key.

Thanks for the info guys, I decided in the end to let insurance handle it either way, as with the police recovery and storage costs + repairs, I can see it already being more than the excess on my policy anyway.
That and someone took a snap of it being 'recovered' as I'd posted it stolen on some local facebook groups...It was dumped on it's side on the recovery truck...
Also yes, this is a HISS system bike too.

I did that with my old Deaville, cut the chip out of the old key, gouged out plastic in new one and hot glued and taped it in.

Well, update time: Bike was eventually written off by the insurance, I did consider having it back as a Cat N (again, it war reversed into by a police van last april lol) but as they somehow managed to fry the entire electrical system along with quite a bit more damage to the bodywork than I was led to believe, I decided it wasn't worth it.

So now my insurance is at least triple previous years (general price rises + having a theft claim on my record) and I can't afford to insure hardly anything, or don't get any quotes at all.

In the end I got a 1997 Divvy 900, a least I can afford to insure the bloody thing, and it's been well looked after. Hopefully in a year or two I might be able to insure something better again!

You ended up with a much more powerful bike than your old commuter, so all's well that ends well.
