Is it really worth it?

A 50/70cc ped will be shite. The novelty of "hell yeah, got my own bike at last! Freedom is mine!" will wear off very quick when you're trundling along at < 30mph everywhere, in the pissing down cold, wind and rain.

A 125 will still be relatively shite, but significantly better and less illegal. Any quasi-decent 125 will be able to do 60mph or more at a push, and actually worthwhile for getting around the place.

Unless of course you live in a tiny town/village or something and dont need to ever travel anywhere on A roads or dual carriageways etc. in which case a 50 will be just fine I guess?

Dont forget, young male first time rider/drivers get absolute SHAFTED by insurers as standard, if you do anything stupid like riding an illegal vehicle and get caught, say goodbye to ever being able to afford to insure anything ever again. Especially if you intend on getting a car at some point, with average insurance prices for a 18yr old male being around £2k, and thats WITHOUT any points or driving convinctions on your licence.

Ride your nice, legal 50 for a year, then plaster it with Aprilla and Akrovich stickers (which add at least 10bhp each!) and sell it to some other 16yr old for double what you paid for it, then buy a 125 Mr. Green

Frankly I can't understand why we think that putting 16-year-olds on a machine that can just about lumber up to 29 is a good idea, safety-wise. You can still kill yourself T-boning a car at 29 but you spend the rest of your miserable year in the gutter being overtaken by Honda Civics doing 29.3. Or you do what OP has proposed and risk fubaring your next 5 years' motoring.

I'd propose: a full theory test and a 2-day CBT. Then it's straight onto a 125 on L plates. Test at age 17. If you get 3 points on your provisional then it's back to square one.

3 years is a bit amateurish.

You've got to ask why someone chose to respond to an 8 1/2 years old thread, started by a person who's only ever posted one thread and has never been seen since, AND then quote someone who hasn't been active for nearly 6 years!

You've got to ask how the hell did they find the topic and the thought process behind feeling the need to reply. It defies logic.

The real question is "why not?"

Logic need not apply at that time on a Sunday.

That's the good thing about forums. Some great stuff is out there, archived. You just need to search for it.

True, but a post from a spotty teen who didn't even have a bike and was planning to break the law before even got a licence ain't one of them.

Yes. I must admit I didn't really bother re-reading the thread. Just stating generalities. Laughing

That does depend entirely on your point of view.
