In no surprise to anyone, the 6v headlight on my yb100 is total dogshit.

Is there a method, which does not involve changing all the wiring to run at 12v, that I can increase the brightness slightly.

Not readily. It's a light for being seen by other people, not for seeing with.

You'd probably need to convert to DC only and use an LED to get any significantly improved lighting output.

Otherwise it's just using the highest quality standard wattage bulb you can find. As I remember they have a 25/25w P36d tungsten filament as standard. They do a halogen upgrade with the same base which may be worth a try, should be a good bit brighter (or at least whiter).

Don't be tempted to up the wattage, it wont help.

What fitment bulb?
what rating?
single or dual filament?
I'd try a 6v compatible LED and if its stock AC powered, probably
spend a quid on some components and use a diode and capacitor to get a steadier output
I saw a spec for a yb100 that mentioned a 15/15w bulb
you'll get a lot more light from a 15W led than you will from a 15W incandescent bulb.
I'll assume its too old to worry about MOT beam pattern

Mrs stinkwheel has a YB. It's got one of those crescent shaped split single lighting coils where it taps off half the output for AC lighting with a ballast resistor and half rectifies the remainder through one of those fan-shaped diodes to charge the battery. No regulator at all. Seperate coil for the spark.

The headlight is truly crap. It also doesn't really charge the battery effectively and either kills a battery or a diode roughly every 6 months.

I stuck a C90 reg/rec on her one so now it just fails to effectively charge the battery without actually killing it. We decided the best solution to the lighting was to just not ride it in the dark.

If riding it in the dark was going to be a thing, I'd re-jig it so all the output went into the battery via the honda reg/rec, replace all the lighting with LED and rewire the headlamp switch so that was powered from the battery.

I've saved this one in my ebay watch list for the A100(suzuki yb equivalent), not 100% it works on AC like the filament bulb tho'

I tried a positive earth LED headlamp bulb on a bike with regulated AC lighting. It lit up with the power of the sun for around half a second. Luckily it was a cheap ebay one because I had a suspicion that might happen.

I am using them successfully on Mrs stinkwheels Honda Wave but it has halfwave rectified direct lighting rather than full AC, so I'd suggest a diode would be required at an absolute minimum to make one work on a YB100.

How about a secondary LED lighting system run from a separate Lithium-Ion battery pack?

It's got its last MOT in June this year, but I can wait until its last MOT before making changes

I was going to ride it to work on the odd day. I'd like the headlight to work to the extent where if for whatever reason I have to stay late at work, the headlight is enough for me to get home.

The other option is just to attach one of my bicycle LED headlights to the handlebars and use them in the rare occasion it is dark

I'd suggest that is the path of least resistance.
