Hi,

I'm tempted to take my CG125 to East Grinstead from Wavertree, Liverpool (L15 to RH19).

Will this be hard to do on a learner license? How hard would it be to navigate?

Thanks,

Toby

Why not try the AA routefinder and click the 'avoid motorways' box?

I think it would be a good idea to take a map tho just in case you get lost or miss a turning.

I've attached the directions in "Tiny" front to this post... (Paste into NPad if you want to read it, don't want to break the mousewheels of people that aren't interested.

I like this route compared to RAC as it skips London as I clicked 'avoid toll roads'.

Looks hard as fuck.

Nowt boring about doing 230 miles completely on your own, on a bike you haven't had a chance to go out on much... Very Happy

I love slow speed cruising on it, I could easily ride it all day.

Most I've done is about 120 in one day and I was fine.

I rode my CG-125 from Bedford to Gosport and back again.

As well as not goint on motorways, I also avoided major A roads, like the A34.

Main problem I found was that many local authorities want the traffic to go a certain way, and seem to get a bit vague with road signage on purpose, if you are trying to stick to minor back roads.

Rather than print out a long list of directions, I boiled it down to a few towns and villages, and a couple of notes on roads, which I stapled inside some plastic to keep dry, and stuffed in my pocket.

Oh, and I had to pull over and let the engine cool down a few times

p.s Useless piece of trivia, I've had plastic surgery at the hospital in East Grinstead.

I did as well, at the Queen Victoria?

I had major surgery done at the burns unit, which was the best in Europe.

It's where I'm from, I'm going for a funeral, so might be a better idea to get the bus, as I don't want to stress people out by being late/lost.

fuck the road to road directions off straight away, they are always destined to go wrong and you dont wanna be stopping every 5 mins or looking down a them stuck on your tank

write the list of major towns and cities you need to head through, past or near on the way, shouldnt be that many, stick the list of towns to your tank and wing it

it does work out

Hmm, I want to make use of my tank bag and tailpack, can carry light goods in a rucksack as well.

I really want to do this, but I'm not sure if it's the right circumstances for me to take it as an excuse to go on a road trip.

i agree with goose and thx, its easier to remember place names when you have roads signs to jog your memory, than it is to remember a345 or whatever.

the thing is you will still need quite a big list or place names so that when you get to one, you find signs for the next one

if the names you right down from your route are too far apart, there wont be signs to the next place

for the 80 mile route to my mums, there are 6 town names to remember to get me there

definitely take a map, but use a list to help you rather than having to look at the map all the time

set out early, so you can have plenty of breaks and arent rushing and making mistakes

Only thing I'm worried about is encountering things I haven't seen before on the roads... Such as steep hills and contraflow bus lanes/normal bus lanes.

What would be the best time to leave? I reckon about 6am as I can leave Liverpool in the dark (I can navigate Lpool well anyway) and still be in daylight if I come unstuck.

If you have a credit card or know somebody with a credit card.. get down to your nearest staples, buy a garmin I3 for £130 use it to get you there and back, take it back within the 14days and get your full refund..

Cheeky but usefull.

Hi Toby,

That would be an epic journey. I doff my hat to you sir if you do it! Take your point about going to the funeral not being the best time to attempt it though.

I do a 120 mile round trip regularly using mostly major A roads. It's dull and it makes you wish you could go faster, but it's not painful or particularly scary. And is occasionally fun, and or with good views (dawn over Norfolk is cool as well). But I do know the route.

The way I see it you've got two options:

1. Stick with the major A roads, because it will be easier to find your way and more direct, but more tiring, less fun, and more dangerous in a lot of ways.

or

2. Go on smaller roads (this is 'FTW' I think!), and it will be really interesting and rewarding navigating the back waters of the central UK (and hard). It will take much longer though. I think I agree with your leave at 6 plan (even though it's not dark at 6 anymore is it?).

Mr. Z's Garmin idea struck me as particularly good as well (I bet you can set it to avoid M'ways). Not sure of his name, but isn't there a guy on here who's done the end to end on a 125 Varadero? He might have some good tips.

You've made me excited just thinking about it Razz Shocked

Best of luck Thumbs Up

I'd take a cushion to sit on cause your arse is gonna cane on a journey like that on a CG seat, i hope you like piles. Smile

It's definately possible to do, but i doubt youll be much of a fan of the CG by the end of it. As someone said though, ignore the street to street directions and just get the A/B road numbers and the junctions you need if any, and also write down your route on a piece of paper you can keep handy. You also might want to get a cheap tank bag (theres a good one made by Hein Gericke for not too much) and a little map (HG also do one for about a tenner), that way you can use the map holder on top to keep track of your journey and carry food/flask of drinks for when you stop. Cause you will need to stop, youre probably looking at a 5 hour journey at least, so you really dont wanna be a hero!

Dont worry about things you havent encountered before, the CG can handle hills well enough, just dont expect to be going very fast. Just use a low gear and take it steady.

You can set it to avoid major highways, it will try and take you on a-roads but (generally) not motorways, also set it to shortest distance seems to cut them out..

Otherwise just aiming for towns off a list has allways worked for me in the past, and if you get really stuck you can allways ask somebody how to get to xyz...

Other suggestions Razz

Take a big bottle of water, especially if its hot, take as many rests as you need, and whatever autoroute says for time double it Wink

Good time to learn then, got to do it sometime. Make sure you have recovery, a mobile, a map and some money/credit card. Then what is there to worry about? If you find you can't make it in a oner, you can always stop off somewhere.

Hell, If my mate Danny can get himself from Melrose in the Scottish borders to Kirkwall on Orkney in a day on an H100, you can do that journey on a CG125.

London's a fairly big target to aim at. Worry about the directions when you get near where you're actually going.

The problem with just following signs to places you know are on the route, is that they will take you onto the big As or motorways. It's a kind of funelling, if you see what I mean? The smaller roads will have signs to the smaller places, smaller distances away, which won't be on your shortlist.

Just a thought.

Edit: kind of what colin1 and thx have already said? Wink

If you can, try and plan an orbital route around towns rather than going through them, even if it adds a few miles. Trying to be in the right lane at the right time while following signs and roadmarkings and paying attention to city traffic is quite tricky in unfamiliar surroundings, and if you do veer off course it's a nightmare trying to find your way back, in my experience.

Make sure that if you do use printed instructions on your tank bag that it doesn't take more than a glance to read them, otherwise plan on plenty of stops, missed junctions or dangerous stretches of staring at your tank rather than the road Wink (that's one mistake I made). Just plan for more regular stops to swap over pages if in doubt.

Might be a good idea to work out a rough refueling schedule as well, as in "once I pass town Xyz I should refuel just in case", just as a reminder. Expect somewhat higher fuel consumption than normal, since you're likely to keep the throttle pinned a lot (I only got ~65mpg out of my CG razzing it from Oxford and Notts).
