Decided to see what I could do to tidy up my number plate situation, as it's all rather bloated and excessively heavy. With some top advice from Marmalade earlier in the day, I decided to make a start when I got home. Here's what I've done so far (Will update once I do more)

The aim is to remove a section from the bottom of the rear light, so it emits white light directly below, meaning I can remove the big unit, and shift the number plate up.

From crafting knife, to pocket knife, to drilling and then hack sawing, I slowly got to the point where I removed the section needed.

This is the result after filing down with metal files. I then keyed the surface with some 60 grit sandpaper.

After applying a generous bead of adhesive, I placed a piece of clear plastic over the hole.

This is where I sourced the plastic from, an empty craft knife packet!

This is the size of the piece I managed to get out before filing.

Here you can see the light that's being emitted downward by the window I made.

Another shot of the same.

And an upward shot of the window. I may well play with the reflector unit so the black shadow isn't there, unsure yet |
